Exam Instructions to Students

It is your responsibility to be familiar with the rules prior to attending your examination.

This information therefore must be read together with the:

You must:

  • adhere to all instructions given by exam invigilators.
  • be present to enter the venue approximately 5-10 or 30 minutes (for examinations in the Sports Hall) before the scheduled start of the examination. The Joondalup Sports Hall has allocated seating, if you are scheduled in this venue you will be required to take note of your allocated seat number that’s displayed within your personalised timetable in SIMO.
  • enter the room in a single line where you will be directed to where you are required to sit.
  • complete your name and other details on all required exam materials when instructed to do so. If you are unable to complete all fields within the allocated time, you can return to complete them during the duration of your examination.  If you were, however, unable to do so by the end of the session, then please inform the invigilator collecting your exam paper so that they can provide additional time if required.
  • complete and sign the Examination Registration Form and the details required on answer booklets and any other answer form(s) when instructed to do so. If you do not agree to comply with the conditions under which the examination is held by signing the Examination Registration Form you will be required to leave the venue and will receive zero marks for the examination.
  • display your current ECU student identification card, valid Australian photo driver’s licence, or passport on the top right corner of your examination desk for the duration of the exam. If you have no identification, you will be advised to go to the Student Hub to have your identification verified. You must do this prior to entering the examination venue and no extra time will be allowed if the examination has commenced.
  • turn off all mobile telephone and/or unauthorised electronic devices before the exam commences. Students may incur a penalty if their mobile rings during the exam.
  • place all valuables, mobile phones or any other portable electronic devices in your bag or other carrier, under your chair, prior to the commencement of the examination.
  • only have authorised examination materials on your desk, in your possession or under your control during your exam. The invigilator is permitted to inspect any item on your desk. The invigilator is also permitted to ask you to display the contents of your pockets. Declining to do so could be construed as evidence that you have unauthorised materials in your possession.
  • remain seated and raise your hand if you want to attract the attention of an Invigilator.
  • close your examination papers and ensure no answers can be seen if you are given permission to leave the room temporarily.
  • ensure that all answer papers and other examination material have been collected by an Invigilator before you leave the venue.

You must not:

  • be admitted into the venue after one hour from the time the exam commences.
  • leave the venue without permission before one hour has elapsed from the time the exam commences^.
  • leave the venue without permission during the final 10 minutes of the exam^.
  • sit your exam in the wrong venue.
  • wear a watch or any other time piece during your exam.  You must place your watch and/or time piece and other valuables in your bag or other carrier, under your chair, before the exam commences.
  • be readmitted to the exam room after you have left it unless, during the full period of your absence, you have been under approved supervision.
  • write during reading time or after the exam finishes. You must not also continue writing when instructed by the Invigilator to stop.
  • eat during your exam. If you have a medical condition that requires you to eat during an exam, you will need to register with the Access and Inclusion office prior to your exam.
  • bring unauthorised materials into the exam venue such as summary notes and/or study sheets, white-out, lollies, chapstick, tissues or any other item not specified in the ‘Authorised Materials’ section of the “Exam Instructions for Students” download and What can I take into my exam page. The invigilator will have tissues available if required.
  • remove any examination papers or materials from the exam venue.
  • speak or make any noise until you are outside and away from the building once you have been permitted to leave the venue by the Invigilator.
  • wear hats or other head coverings. Hats, helmets, baseball caps or any other headwear are not permitted to be worn in an exam.  Please note that head coverings required to be worn for obligatory religious or cultural purposes are permitted inside the venue*.
  • engage in any of the following behaviours or activities during the exam:
    • speak, communicate or attempt to communicate verbally or non-verbally in any manner with another student or person;
    • share any equipment such as calculators, dictionaries, pens, pencils, rulers or erasers with another student;
    • view or attempt to view the work of another student or permit another student to view or attempt to view your work;
    • access or attempt to access your bag or look at or touch any other item under your chair; and
    • leave the venue without the permission of an Invigilator, (including prior to the commencement of the examination). If you leave without permission you will not be allowed to return.

*If you have any questions on what head coverings are permitted, please contact the Assessments and Student Records office to seek clarification before your exam.
