Tutorial Assistance

The Aboriginal Tutorial and Mentoring Program (ATMP) aims to improve the educational outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in tertiary courses to the same levels as those for non-Aboriginal Australians. It focuses on developing students’ self-directed academic learning.

The ATMP, funded through Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) Indigenous Student Success Program (ISSP) and reports directly to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, covers the cost of engaging tutors to provide academic and study skills assistance over a semester, with the intention of guiding students to direct their own learning. Students will be matched with a qualified tutor and will receive tuition hours for the semester, based on study load.

Kurongkurl Katitjin facilitates the ATMP for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at ECU.

IMPORTANT: Students please ensure you have read the ATMP Guidelines before you apply for the program. It is a requirement that you understand and agree to the conditions of the program before signing and submitting your application.

Who is eligible to apply for the ATMP?

All current Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ECU students are encouraged to apply for ATMP.

To be eligible you must satisfy the following:

  • be an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander person
  • be formally enrolled in the University Preparation Course (UniPrep), undergraduate degree / honours; postgraduate coursework degree or VET courses
  • be enrolled in at least 1 unit

ECU HDR students (Doctoral and Master by Research candidates) can access support the ECU’s Graduate Research Services.

Allocation of Hours

Students are eligible to receive up to 45 hours of tutoring per semester depending on study load. Please see table below.

Study LoadHours per semester
3 / 4 units (full time) 45 hours
2 units30 hours
1 unit15 hours

Session Hours

When scheduling tutoring sessions, it is required that each session is conducted for a minimum of 2 hours in one setting. In instances where the intended purpose of the session, such as assessment feedback, falls short of the 2-hour minimum requirement, Kurongkurl Katitjin encourages all students to access the Academic Skills Centre Learning Advisors for unit-specific support, Studiosity for grammar and structure and ECU Libraries for referencing.

Additional Hours

Student requests for additional hours beyond the initial allocation is discretionary and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This may only be applied for once the initial allocation has been exhausted and can be applied for using the Request for Additional Hours form.

Outside of Standard Teaching Period

Outside of standard teaching period refers to those studying in Accelerate (AC), Trimester (TR) or Full Year (F) periods. Allocation of hours will be 15 hours per unit and a new application form will need to be complete for each new period that commences. For example, if you have a tutor in AC1 and would like to continue your engagement with ATMP in AC2, a new application is required.

Summer and Winter School Units

A total of 15 hours of ATMP tutoring can be allocated for Summer or Winter School Units if:

  1. The unit/s are part of the student’s ongoing course, and
  2. A student’s current ATMP tutor is available to continue working with the student, or
  3. A Tutor is available

How to apply

Students are encouraged to apply for tutoring prior to the semester commencing to allow time to find a suitable tutor.

Applications for 2024 are now open.

Are you new to ECU or did not have a tutor in the previous semester?

ATMP students from Semester 2, 2023 are reminded to complete the 2023 ATMP Student Survey before they can be re-matched in 2024.

All enquiries should be directed to ATMP via atmp@ecu.edu.au

What happens after applying?

Existing ATMP students

If your Tutor from the previous semester / period is available, students will be re-matched and an email will be sent to confirm allocation of hours and when tutoring sessions can recommence.

New to ATMP for the Semester

Once a student has submitted an application (linked above), ATMP will review the application and assess the requirement for a Tutor. Students will be paired with a suitable Tutor in their area of study, and this will be confirmed with a ‘match’ email that will detail the Tutor information, allocation of hours and units required for tutoring.

Please note: Tutoring can only take place once written permission has been given, even if the tutoring arrangement is a roll-over from the previous semester. Tutoring can only commence from the date outlined in the match email.

Matching will commence 2 weeks prior to semester beginning.
