Edith Cowan University Intervention Strategy Guidelines
These guidelines outline the processes that Edith Cowan University (ECU) applies to the support of Student Visa holders who are at risk of not completing their course of study in the registered course duration.
To comply with the requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) National Code 2018, ECU must provide a documented strategy to assist these students to maintain satisfactory course progress. These guidelines should be read in conjunction with the 'Enrolment Loads for International Students' policy and apply to all Student Visa holders enrolled at ECU.
For the purposes of these guidelines and ECU’s compliance with the National Code 2018, an intervention strategy:
- is a plan to assist students who have been identified as being at academic risk of not completing their course of study in the registered duration, to complete their studies;
- is designed to assist a student in managing their studies successfully and maintaining satisfactory academic progress;
- can consist of various components depending upon a student’s individual circumstances, needs and willingness to engage with the strategy;
- aims to assist identified students get their studies on track and complete within the registered duration of the course or provide useful strategies to assist the student in developing a new and more appropriate study plan to complete their program.
- may include
- a specified reduced enrolment load;
- teaching and learning workshops and activities;
- a modified study plan;
- health and counselling recommendations; or
- other steps to consider a student’s current situation and future needs.
- must be documented on the student record to enable ECU to extend the Student Visa holder’s Confirmation of Enrolment.
Identifying students at risk of not meeting course progress requirements
Students are identified in one of the following ways:
- At the end of each teaching period, Student Visa Holders will be advised of their Academic Progression and a student who is on Red Status will be identified as being at risk of not making satisfactory course progress. These students are required to complete the Succeed Questionnaire which will create a personalised Success Plan. This plan will recommend support services and options available to them.
- Students may also be identified at risk of not completing in the registered course duration through other means such as, identification by a staff member or through self-identification if a student considers they are having difficulty coping and seeks assistance.
- Students identified as on Amber Status will also be contacted and encouraged to complete the Succeed Questionnaire to create a personalised Success Plan. This plan will recommend support services and options available to them.
Contacting identified students and activating an Intervention Strategy
An Intervention Strategy is activated via the Academic Progression (and Success Plan) program.
Students will receive an Academic Progression notification from Student Administration confirming their status and information about the requirement to complete the Succeed Questionnaire which, once completed, will generate a Success Plan recommending the support services or activities available to address their situation.
Students identified as at risk of not making satisfactory course progress by an ECU staff member or students that self-identify should be directed to the ESOS Managing study loads Achieving Satisfactory Course Progress web page, or to the Student Success Officers, Learning Advisors or Counsellors who will assist in developing and implementing an Intervention Strategy as necessary.
Students who do not make satisfactory course progress
Students who are not making satisfactory course progress will be notified by ECU as required under the ESOS National Code of Practice 2018.
