Study tours, internships and short programs

Taking part in a study tour is a great way to do something out of the ordinary and immerse yourself in an enriching cultural experience.

You’ll also develop your knowledge and practical skills while possibly receiving credit towards your ECU degree – and give you something to enhance your resume.

School of Arts and Humanities


Singapore Documentary Collaboration Project

This exciting opportunity offers a one week study tour to work on an international project. ECU students will work on a collaborative documentary exchange project with students from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Together the students will produce a 15 minute documentary that explores trans-border issues in relation to the development of a more sustainable future for the planet. The documentary will be post-produced in both schools and released for public screenings in 2017.

University wide global leadership program (TCU)


Be competitive in an increasingly global employment market and apply for this two week intensive study tour to Japan. This study tour is targeted at ECU students who have demonstrated leadership and have actively contributed to campus life especially through the Tokyo City University (TCU) Buddy Program. On this unique two week trip students are able to gain industry exposure while participating in academic and cultural components. The tour will focus on preparing students for the transition to the workplace, leadership and soft skills development.

Community and Cultural Development Study Tour

Be part of an extraordinary opportunity and visit Mongolia in June 2017. Psychology and the Chinese Culture Study Tour

This two-week study tour to China will offer students the opportunity to be immersed in Chinese culture and to gain insight into how this influences the discipline of psychology in China. Students will attend formal lectures and participate in psychology-based cultural activities at ECU partner, Binhai College Nankai University in Tianjin. This is a great opportunity to compare and contrast the way in which mental health services are delivered, especially with respect to care for older people, the role of traditional Chinese medicine practices, and the emerging role of women in society.

School of Business and Law


Sri Lanka Business Study tour

Undergraduate students in the School of Business & Law are invited to participate in a 17-day study tour to Colombo, Sri Lanka. This tour will cover culture and negotiation methods. Students will have the opportunity to engage with like-minded students from the longstanding ECU partner, the Australian College of Business and Technology (ACBT). In addition to classes on campus, student will visit the tourist bureau, Austrade, markets and local industries. Introductory language studies will feature in the study tour unit.

Global Management Study Tour

Learn more about the Chinese business management practices, interact with domestic and foreign students and develop your networks and cultural competency. Students enrolled for the Global Management unit are encouraged to apply for this nine day study tour to Qingdao, a world-renowned port in China. During this study tour students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of international trade particularly on logistics and export-import. The tour will incorporate a visit to the Ocean University of China, a top comprehensive university in China.

Planning Study Tour

This 10-day trip study tour will introduce ECU undergraduate planning and business students to international best practice applications of urban design, planning and development within the context of urban Japan, focussing on Tokyo and Kyoto. Partnering with Tokyo City University and Kyoto Sangyo University, students will observe a showcase of key urban planning and development issues such as urban sprawl, urban congestion, traffic management, integrated development, density and open space provision. In addition to the academic gains, students will be able to participate in cultural events in Tokyo and Kyoto, where they will be introduced to Japanese life and culture. Eligible students may also obtain Government funding to support their program costs.

Global Education Service Learning Trip

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education are invited to participate in a study tour to South Africa. Participating students will have the opportunity to travel to Cape Town for 14 days, during the mid-year break. Students will be hosted with the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch and have the opportunity to volunteer in an educational setting with disadvantaged children. This is an excellent opportunity to experience diversity, cultural differences, citizenship and global education. Eligible students may also obtain government funding to support their program costs.

Humanities & Social Sciences Indonesia Study Tour

Pre-service teachers are invited to join this 13 day study tour to Indonesia where they will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff and students from the British International School, Jakarta (BIS) in providing educational experiences for shanty-dwelling children who are otherwise unable to obtain education. This study tour will provide participants with diverse educational experiences. Eligible students may also obtain government funding to support their program costs.

Engineering Student Ambassador Study Tour to China

This 12-day study tour to China invites undergraduate students in all engineering disciplines to undertake a project involving an international offshore experience at Shanghai University of Electric Power. On this tour participants will gain experience of their discipline within an international context and have the opportunity to draw together theory and practical experience on current engineering issues of importance to China. A structured academic program will be enhanced by experiencing Chinese culture. Eligible students may also obtain government funding to support their program costs.

School of Medical and Health Sciences


Paramedical Science UK Ambulance Placement Program

Third year paramedic students are invited to travel to undertake a clinical placement with the London Ambulance Service, or Medical Services. Students who partake will study one university unit whilst on placement and accompanying paramedics on the road in one of the busiest paramedic workload cities in the world. In addition to unit outcomes, students will also be have the chance to experience and integrate into the cultural aspects of the local placement, strengthening the relationship between Australia and UK ambulance services and distinguishing themselves in employability through this international experience.

Vanuatu Therapy Study Tour

Travel to Vanuatu for a two week study tour and have the opportunity to work with the Vanuatu Government and the local community, attending intervention sessions with clients with disabilities. This unique study tour will offer students the opportunity to learn more about their discipline field in an environment where resources are limited. This environment will challenge students to be creative and engage in problem solving while experiencing local culture when visiting rural villages. Internationalisation of Clinical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for Paramedical Science Students

On this exciting tour, ECU second and third year Bachelor of Paramedical Science students will travel to Indonesia to experience clinical placement as paramedics in Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, Bali. Students will undertake hospital and pre-hospital based clinical practicum placements within Sanglah Hospital, including within the Emergency Department, and accompany hospital staff in the pre-hospital field. In addition to learning from immersion within the Indonesian health system and culture, ECU students will also teach fundamental life support skills to Indonesian staff (equivalent to Australian SES and first responders). This is an excellent opportunity to gain international experience. Eligible students may also obtain Government funding to support their program costs.

Exercise and Health Sciences China Study Tour

This study tour to China offers ECU students studying Exercise and Health Science the opportunity to be immersed in Chinese culture for 16 days. This is an exciting chance to see the way in which the culture has influenced the discipline of exercise and sport science in China. Students will participate in a structured academic program and relevant cultural activities at Tianjin University of Sport (TUS). This study tour will encourage students to experience and study China’s traditional approaches to health and well-being.

Medical & Health Sciences Study Tour to China

Have a unique insight into the ways in which Chinese medical, scientific and health systems deal with a multitude of challenges. Students enrolled in various discipline areas of the School of Medical & Health Sciences are encouraged to apply for this stimulating 16 day study tour to Tianjin, China. Apart from a structured academic program offered at Tianjin Medical University, participants will also have the opportunity to visit cultural sites and related medical facilities. School of Nursing and Midwifery


Midwifery Clinical Placement (The Philippines)

Midwifery students, stage six and seven will have the opportunity for a 16-day placement in Manila in the Philippines. Australian students will work alongside local health care providers offering health education and community health outreach services to communities in the area. Participants will be able to assist physicians and local Arellano nursing students and provide health care support to locals. This project works in conjunction with community based organisations and with local clinics and schools. Eligible students may also obtain government funding to support their program costs.

Nursing Clinical Placement (Cambodia)

Clinical placement to Cambodia for 15 days for final stage nursing students is a unique opportunity to work alongside local health care providers to offer health education and community health outreach services to communities in the area. Students will be based in Cambodia for the duration of the tour and will be afforded the experience of living as the locals do and providing primary health care and education in various settings. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain an insight into the provision of healthcare with limited resources and across cultural and language barriers. Participants will have the opportunity to assist with patient consultations and offer educational primary health care workshops to local communities.

Nursing Clinical Placement (Nepal)

Clinical placement in Nepal for 17 days offers an opportunity for ECU Nursing students to work alongside local health care providers to offer health education and community health outreach services to communities in the area. This program provides students with an insight into the provision of healthcare with limited resources and across cultural and language barriers by undertaking a community placement working in collaboration with the local health district and public hospital. Students will divide their time between shadowing and supporting local nursing staff on the hospital wards and providing primary health care to outlying communities as part of the hospital’s outreach program.

Nursing Clinical Placement (Laos)

This Clinical Placement of 17 days to Laos is targeting final stage nursing students who will have the opportunity to work alongside local health care providers to offer health education and community health outreach services to communities in the area. This placement will provide students with an insight into the provision of healthcare with limited resources and across cultural and language barriers as well as an insight to the nature of health education in the region via a visit to a Medical College. This placement is in conjunction with community based organisations working in partnership with local clinics, hospitals and colleges.

Clinical Placement (Cape Town)

A first for ECU in having a 14 day clinical placement to Cape Town, South Africa. Australian Nursing students are able to work alongside local health care providers and offer health education and community health outreach services to communities in the area. This placement provides students with insight into the provision of healthcare with limited resources and across cultural and language barriers as they have the opportunity to provide health care support to locals in the townships. This placement works in conjunction with community based organisations, local clinics and schools. Eligible students may also obtain government funding to support their program costs.

Environmental Research Program

The project is designed to enable two undergraduate students to undertake a project, involving an international offshore experience, which is relevant to an environmental discipline associated with their course of study. The project will provide students with an opportunity to draw together theory and practical experience on current environmental issues of importance to Vietnam, within the historical, economic, political and social context. The project will be comprised of a 4 week visit to Thai Nguyen University.

Science, Health & Education Study Tour to Thailand

This study tour is a joint project between the Schools of Science, Medical & Health Sciences and Education. Students from these diverse disciplines stand to gain an international offshore experience relevant to their studies in environmental/biological science, public health or education. The project aims to immerse undergraduate students in Thai culture and enable them to evaluate ways in which culture influences approaches to science, health and education. The study tour comprises a 2 week visit to Khon Kaen University in Thailand.  The schedule of activities includes lectures, tutorial sessions and field visits, visits to local schools and homestay with a minority ethnic group. Eligible students may also obtain government funding to support their program costs.

Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts


Asia Pacific Bureau Theatre Schools Festival & Directors Conference in Taipei, China

Travel to China and be part of this exciting theatre production at the 111th Asia Pacific Bureau Theatre Schools Festival & Directors Conference in June 2017. Acting students in their 3rd year will have the opportunity to collaborate with students from VCA, University of Melbourne and put together a theatre production at the Conference in Taipei. This is a nine day study tour to China will offer students a chance to advance and deepen the development of their skills for the emerging professional theatre artists in an exciting global context.

International Travel Study Tour – LINK Dance Company 2017

Perform for European audiences and experience different performative spaces, cultures and contexts. Participate in the Montpellier Danse Festival on invitation and perform in the Amsterdam Vondelpark’s Openluchttheater. Apply for this one month performance tour and have a once in a life time experience not possible to conduct in Perth or other parts of Australia. Students will have the chance to observe performances in Julidans Festival whilst participating in workshops with reknown international teachers at Henny Jurriens Dance Foundation’s Summer Dance Intensive. LINK Dance Company

If you are enrolled in the BA Dance Honours course, then you are invited to apply for the LINK Dance Company two week engagement program in China. Students will participate in the Beijing Dance Festival (BDF) in the Taiyuan Province, Shanxi and in Beijing. The Program will include a dance camp and workshops in Shanxi and in Beijing the students will have the opportunity to perform in a theatre while observing performances by Chinese and international dance companies.

2017 BNU Creative Dance Seminar

WAAPA dance students are invited to apply for this event in China. BPA Singapore Study Experience

This short-term, two month study experience immerses Australian undergraduate students in the rich culture of Singapore while receiving first-hand, embodied training in traditional Asian performance at the highly respected Intercultural Theatre Institute. Apart from this formidable academic experience, this is an excellent opportunity for students to visit cultural sites, theatres and galleries. Experience intercultural approaches to performance, study traditional Asian techniques of training and engage in mutual respect and healthy debates.
