Frequent Asked Questions

Certificate-based authentication uses a digital certificate installed on your device instead of a password. It’s more secure (prevents phishing) and gives you a seamless 'connect-and-go' experience.

Yes. Because SecureW2 is a publicly accessible, you can download and install your certificate anywhere with internet access so you’re ready the moment you arrive.

Certificates expire after 13 months. We’ll send you a reminder at least two weeks beforehand – simply repeat the download/install process to renew.

You only need any internet connection (mobile data, Guest Wi-Fi, home broadband, mobile hotspot, etc) to run the SecureW2 installer. Once the certificate is on your device, eduroam will work everywhere it is available.

Certificates provide stronger security than passwords and eliminate repeated password prompts, protecting you from phishing and credential theft.

Absolutely. eduroam federates your login back to ECU’s servers, so you can roam to any participating institution worldwide without reconfiguration.

Expired accounts are added to our Certificate Revocation List, so even if your certificate hasn’t reached its 13-month expiry, you won’t be able to authenticate once your ECU account ends.

No. Visiting users’ authentication is always forwarded to their home institution. If you prefer, you can simply “Forget” the eduroam network in your Wi-Fi settings – no manual certificate removal required.

If you require access to ECU’s intranet and internal resources from outside the University, make sure you have the VPN software installed and tested before you visit another institution. To find out how to connect to ECU's VPN, please visit 'How do I install and configure a VPN client?'.
