The Fitness to Study Policy aims to assist in creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment, allowing the University to provide additional support or adjustments to a student’s academic journey. For students who may be experiencing difficulties that are impacting not only their own ability to succeed in their studies but that may also impact on the health, safety or wellbeing of others in the learning environment,
ECU has a wide range of support services to assist students with challenges they face in their studies or life outside the university. On most occasions, getting advice or support from these teams will assist students with getting back on track.
If concern has been raised about your ability to successfully continue in your studies, you can be asked to attend a meeting to discuss the challenges you may be facing.
Fitness to Study meetings are conducted by senior officers in the university who have been appointed to their role by the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
Fitness to Study meetings are a formal process, however they are designed to be supportive. If you receive an invitation to meet regarding concerns for your wellbeing or fitness to study, it is important to reassure you that the meeting is about getting to know you, to understand what may be happening for you and what we as a university can do to assist you further during this time to ensure that you continue to succeed in your studies.
These meetings are designed to be collaborative with students, so any decisions and outcomes are agreed to by everyone. You can bring a trusted support person, family members or representative of the Student Guild to the meeting, and all agreed outcomes are documented and recorded.
If you require guidance or have questions about this process, contact the Student Incident and Support Manager.
