ECU has a Sensory Space in the library on each campus. A Sensory Space is a controllable environment where students can regulate their sensory input, emotions, recover from sensory overwhelm and access resources. Sensory Spaces are important in creating access to education for students with sensory needs.
Who is this space for?
Sensory Spaces are traditionally designed for students with sensory processing disabilities and/or neurodivergence, and the spaces have been designed to support these individuals across three distinct zones: Calm, Connection and Community zones. Each space is also equipped with empowering and affirming resources, as well as a Sensory Library including items such as ear defenders, sensory kits, weighted items, puzzles, and colouring tools.
Alternative Spaces
The Sensory Spaces are not intended for students to complete assignments or undertake long periods of study. Students seeking a quiet place to study should use the quiet study areas in the library or consider booking a silent study room.
All ECU Campus Libraries have an Accessible Technologies Rooms equipped with assistive software, ergonomic furniture, and adaptive devices.
These rooms support students who use technology to access learning and provide a quiet, inclusive environment for study.
The following assistive technology is available at all Campus Libraries and can be accessed by those eligible students who have registered:
Please contact the service to discuss access to this space.
Joondalup campus and City Campus both have a Changing Places Facility. This is a specialised accessible toilet that has height-adjustable adult-sized change bench, a ceiling hoist system, extra space, a centrally located toilet with room on both sides, privacy screens and non-slip flooring. Changing Places Facilities are designed for people with disability and/or specific access needs that cannot use standard accessible toilets. Generally, Changing Places Facility users need to apply for a MLAK key to unlock these facilities, however, ECU’s Changing Places Facilities are unlocked and accessible for all that need them.
