Requesting support from Access and Inclusion

Access and Inclusion can help you at any time during your studies. We encourage you to request support as early as possible so that your adjustments are in place ahead of key deadlines and to support your success.

Adjustments are documented in a Learning Access Plan (LAP) that sets out tailored support to help you succeed at university.

If you would like to receive support from Access and Inclusion, follow the four steps below.

Add your disability details to your enrolment details

You can add details about your disability or health condition to your enrolment through SIMO. Your enrolment gives us some basic information about your disability or health condition. In SIMO, under ‘Enrolment’, review the ‘Service Questions’ and ‘Government Statistics’ sections.

It's your choice whether you provide this information. You can find out more about sharing your disability or health information. If you're not sure whether to share this information, you can talk about it with you Accessibility Adviser in your appointment.

Gather your supporting information

Supporting information/documentation will assist us to identify adjustments suited to your circumstances and to best help you succeed. In most cases, supporting documentation is required before a Learning Access Plan can be created. If you do not have any supporting documentation or are not sure if what you have is relevant, please contact us so we can help.

Supporting documentation should outline:

  • The nature of your disability, injury, medical condition, mental health condition or other circumstances
  • The impact your disability, injury, medical condition, mental health condition or other circumstances may have on your studies
  • If applicable, any recommended adjustments that will minimise the impact on your studies.

You can use the Health Professional’s Report for your health practitioner to complete. We will also accept other documentation or a letter of support, providing it is presented on a letterhead, signed and dated from your practitioner or organisation.

Book an appointment with us to develop a Learning Access Plan

Schedule a time with an Accessibility Adviser to develop your Learning Access Plan. Appointments are available in-person, over the phone or via Microsoft Teams. Complete the Appointment Request Form or contact Access and Inclusion.

In preparation for your appointment, you will be asked to share your supporting document/s via the Student Portal in the ‘My Cases’ section. You will be sent an email with instructions on how to share your supporting document/s. Your information is confidential and will be kept within Access and Inclusion.

You may bring your carer, support worker or parent to your appointment if you wish. Let us know if you need an Auslan interpreter for your appointment.

Attend your appointment and confirm your LAP

During your appointment, your Accessibility Adviser will talk with you about your condition or circumstances, impact on learning, strategies for success and will work with you to develop a Learning Access Plan.

After your appointment, a draft of your Learning Access Plan (LAP) will be shared with you via your ECU student email and accessible in the Student Portal under the ‘My Learning Access’ tab. You will need to review the LAP in the Student Portal and either ‘Accept’ or ‘Request changes’. If you ‘Request changes’ your Accessibility Adviser will be notified and will respond to your request.

Your LAP is not active until you have accepted the plan in the Student Portal.

Once you accept, you can use your LAP straight away and a copy of your LAP will be sent to the Unit Coordinators for units you are enrolled in. You can always find your LAP in the Student Portal under the ‘My Learning Access’ tab.

Update or renew your LAP

You can request a review of your LAP at any time. If your circumstances change during your studies or your adjustments are not effective in supporting you to participate in your studies while managing your disability, health condition or other circumstances, it’s your responsibility to contact Access and Inclusion so that you LAP can be reviewed.

Changes to your circumstances might include:

  • A change to your study, such as going on intermission or changing your course
  • A change to your disability, injury, medical condition, mental health condition or other circumstances, such as additional diagnosed conditions, change to your condition duration, or change to the impact on your studies.

If you have a temporary LAP and it expires, you can contact Access and Inclusion to discuss renewal. You may need to provide supporting documentation.

To review your LAP, please make an appointment.
