A Learning Access Plan (LAP) is created together with an Accessibility Adviser to make sure you have the supports you need to participate fully in your studies. Your LAP is personalised to you, based on your experiences and supporting documentation, and can also be used to share information about your circumstances with your academic staff if you choose.
What is a Learning Access Plan?
- Your Learning Access Plan (LAP) is a record of the tailored adjustments, services and strategies that have been determined to best support you, based on your individual needs and the course requirements. Your LAP is developed with you in discussion with your Accessibility Adviser, and staff from the course team where relevant.
- Your plan is a communication tool to support your access, participation and independence at university, and captures the responsibilities of all people in implementing adjustments.
- Your plan is shared with your teaching staff and relevant professional staff at ECU.
- Some adjustments may need to be tailored to specific units and may not be relevant to some activities/tasks.
- Academic standards of the course need to be met, with adjustments in place.
What do I need to do with my LAP?
- Each semester, read your LAP and think how it applies to your units. You have an important role in actioning some parts of your plan, and timely contact by you is essential. You can access a copy of your LAP at any time via the Student Portal.
- You will need to actively request assessment extensions when needed if extensions are outlined in your LAP. The extensions are not applied automatically. We have outlined the process in more detail below.
- Your LAP will be distributed to your Unit Coordinators and any relevant staff on your behalf. Your LAP is shared upon finalisation and then at the beginning of each teaching period for the duration of the plan.
What are my responsibilities?
It is important that you take ownership of your Learning Access Plan and are aware of your responsibilities.
- You should proactively engage with Access and Inclusion to advise of any changes to your needs or circumstances, including a change of course.
- Your plan will clearly outline the relevant processes to request adjustments; it is important that you follow the correct processes and maintain communication with teaching staff and/or your Accessibility Adviser as needed. Allow ample time for discussion to occur. Follow the relevant university procedures when requesting support, such as Unit procedures when requesting an extension.
- Although your LAP is distributed to Unit Coordinators, when discussing or requesting adjustments you should remind them that you have a LAP in place and attach a copy with any email correspondence.
- If you need to discuss or review your LAP, it is your responsibility to contact Access and Inclusion to make an appointment.
- If you feel that your adjustments are not being implemented after consulting with relevant staff, please contact your Accessibility Adviser urgently to address these concerns.
- Contact Access and Inclusion if you have any questions related to your LAP.
