Accessible Spaces

Sensory Space

ECU has a Sensory Space in the library on each campus. A Sensory Space is a controllable environment where students can regulate their sensory input, emotions, recover from sensory overwhelm and access resources. Sensory Spaces are important in creating access to education for students with sensory needs.

Who is this space for?

Sensory Spaces are traditionally designed for students with sensory processing disabilities and/or neurodivergence, and the spaces have been designed to support these individuals across three distinct zones: Calm, Connection and Community zones. Each space is also equipped with empowering and affirming resources, as well as a Sensory Library including items such as ear defenders, sensory kits, weighted items, puzzles, and colouring tools.

Alternative Spaces

The Sensory Spaces are not intended for students to complete assignments or undertake long periods of study. Students seeking a quiet place to study should use the quiet study areas in the library or consider booking a silent study room.

Assistive Technologies Room

All ECU Campus Libraries have an Accessible Technologies Rooms equipped with assistive software, ergonomic furniture, and adaptive devices.

These rooms support students who use technology to access learning and provide a quiet, inclusive environment for study.

The following assistive technology is available at all Campus Libraries and can be accessed by those eligible students who have registered:

  • Windows computers
  • Height adjustable desks
  • Adjustable, ergonomic seating
  • Scanning and reading appliances (SARA)
  • JAWs (text to speech software)
  • Dragon Naturally Speaking (speech to text software)
  • Appropriate lighting
  • Printers
  • Magnifier (Optelec)

Please contact the service to discuss access to this space.

Changing Places

The Joondalup campus features a Changing Places Facility; a specialised accessible toilet designed for people with high support needs. It includes a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, a hoist system, and enough space for two carers, ensuring dignity and safety for users.

Located inside building 34, level 1. Please access the area through the Student Hub. Upon entering, proceed to the large staircase on the right. To the left of the staircase, you will find an automatic door accompanied by a sign indicating its location.
