ERA is an initiative of the Federal Government to evaluate the quality of research undertaken by Australian higher education institutions. ERA is administered by the Australian Research Council (ARC).
There have been four ERA rounds, in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2018. The next evaluation was scheduled to occur in 2023 but has now been postponed. The ARC are prioritising the development of a modern data driven approach for ERA, to be implemented from 2024-25. Further information is available on the ARC’s ERA 2023 website.

The ERA Time Series Report presents a comparison of ECU submission data and ratings outcomes from all four rounds of ERA. The focus of the report is on the Fields of Research (FoRs) that were assessed (i.e. met the relevant minimum threshold of research outputs to be evaluated) and on key differences between rounds.
