ORCID @ ECU

ORCID Member OrganisationWhat is ORCID?

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a global registry of digital identifiers (ORCID iDs). ORCID addresses the problems of name ambiguity and researcher identification by giving each individual researcher a unique persistent 16-digit numeric identifier.

Benefits of ORCID

Using your ORCID iD, you can unambiguously link yourself to your professional information (e.g. employment affiliation) and research activities (e.g. publications, funding and peer review activities), even if you have multiple name variants or share a name with other researchers.

You will find numerous benefits from having and using an ORCID iD and connecting this to ECU.

  • You own your ORCID iD and retain this irrespective of your institutional affiliation.
  • You control your ORCID iD and choose what information to share, and with whom.
  • You can list all your career outputs in one place and continue to build this over time.
  • You can reduce administrative burden by:
    • automating the flow of publication metadata into your ORCID iD. For example, this can be achieved by linking your Scopus Author ID or Publons Web of Science ResearcherID to ORCID.
    • automating the flow of publication metadata out of your ORCID iD. For example, you can use ORCID to auto-populate research output data in the Australian Research Council RMS.
  • Your unique ORCID iD can help improve the recognition (e.g. citations) you receive for your research activities (e.g. publications, grants, peer review activities) through more accurate associations between you and these activities
  • Your unique ORCID iD can also help improve the discoverability of your works through more accurate associations between you and these works.

Connecting your ORCID iD to ECU will enable the automated flow of information between ORCID and ECU systems. This will provide some immediate benefits. It will make it possible for the University to:

  • Automatically display your ORCID iD link on your academic web profile. This will enable people to link directly to your ORCID record from your web profile.
  • Assert your employment and/or education affiliation with the University on your ORCID record, with ECU being identified as the verified source of this information. Your current position information will display for staff and all your ECU course records will be added for students.

It doesn’t stop there. There are plans to introduce additional functionality to the ECU-ORCID connection that will enable the automated transfer of publications metadata from ORCID to RAS. This proposed functionality will help reduce the amount of information about your publications that you need to manually enter into RAS.  (NB: The anticipated timeline for the introduction of this feature will be subject to available resourcing.)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The FAQs below are designed to address some of the questions you may have about the ECU-ORCID Connect process.

If you are unsure if you already have an ORCID iD, go to the ORCID website and search for your name and affiliation. You can do this via the Advanced Search option. To do this, first click on the magnifying glass icon next the search box on the top right-hand corner of the screen. You can now enter your name and institution name and click on Search.

If you do find yourself and have forgotten your password, do not create a new ORCID iD. You can use Forgot your password or ORCID iD to reset your password.

To create and connect your new ORCID iD:

  • Go to the ECU-ORCID Connect page and sign in.
  • Click on the Create your new ORCID iD and connect to ECU button. You will be directed to the ORCID registration page, which will be pre-populated with your name and email address.
  • Complete the remainder of the registration process. This will include selecting the visibility settings for your information and ORCID notification settings. ORCID also recommends including an additional email address, which could be particularly useful if you change institution. Finalise this process by clicking on Register. For more information on the registration process refer to the Register your ORCID iD page at the ORCID website.
  • You will be directed to a page where ECU will ask you for a list of permissions to read, write and update your ORCID record. Click Authorize to grant the requested permissions to ECU.

If you are unsure whether you have already connected your ORCID iD to ECU, you can:

  • Check your Employment or Education affiliation in your ORCID record. If ECU is listed as one of your affiliations and ECU is the source for this affiliation, then this means you have connected your ORCID iD to ECU.
  • If you do not see ECU as the source of your ECU Employment or Education affiliation but are still unsure about whether you have connected for your ORCID iD to ECU, contact orcid@ecu.edu.au.

To connect your existing ORCID iD:

  • Go to the ECU-ORCID Connect page and sign in.
  • Click on the Connect your existing ORCID iD to ECU button. You will be directed to the ORCID login page.
  • Log into your ORCID record.
  • If the connection was successful, you will see a confirmation screen with your ORCiD iD details.

Confirmation you've successfully connected your ORCID iD with ECU

  • You will be directed to a page where ECU will ask you for a list of permissions to read, write and update your ORCID record. Click Authorize to grant the requested permissions to ECU.

Connecting your ORCID iD through ECU-ORCID Connect is the only way that the University will be able to accurately and securely connect your ORCID iD to ECU systems. This makes it possible for ECU to assert your affiliation with the University on your ORCID record and to automatically add your ORCID iD to your staff web profile.

It is possible for you to create a new ORCID iD (if necessary) directly via the ORCID website. However, the ECU-ORCID Connect portal makes the creation and connection of your ORCID iD as easy and seamless as possible by integrating both steps into a single process which should only take a few minutes of your time.

Future anticipated benefits to streamline the capture of metadata about your research activities within ECU systems will only be possible once you have completed the ECU-ORCID Connect process.

When you assign the requested permissions to ECU you are making them a trusted organization for your ORCID record. Without these permissions ECU will be not be able to access your ORCID record and will be unable to provide you with the benefits that will stem from granting the requested permissions. Furthermore, although some of these permissions may not be immediately used it is important to note that by granting them now you will automatically receive the benefits that will arise from the future developments of ECU’s ORCID connection.

Firstly, it is through this permissions process that ECU will be able to obtain your verified ORCID iD, which can be stored in ECU systems and workflows. It is through the capture of your verified ORCID iD that ECU will then be able to automatically publish and display your ORCID iD on your staff web profile.

ECU will ask for three types of permissions:

  • Read your limited-access information – this will enable ECU to read information on your ORCID record set to either visible to everyone or just to trusted parties. In the future this would make it possible for ECU to transfer your publication metadata from ORCID to RAS.
  • Add or update your research activities – this will enable ECU to add or update affiliation (e.g. employment, education) works, funding, and peer review information. ECU will be using this permission to add your Employment or Education affiliation.
  • Add or update your biographical information – this will enable ECU to add or update biographical information on your ORCID record, such as other external identifiers, website links, country or region.

It is important to note that ECU will only be able to update or delete information that it has added to your ORCID record.

It is also important to note that ECU will never see your ORCID password and will not be able to see any information that you set to visible only to you.

To revoke permissions, go to the Trusted organizations section of your account settings page and click delete (the trash icon) next to the organization whose access you want to revoke.

Remember if you revoke permissions for ECU you will no longer have your ORCID iD connected to ECU systems. Also, if you want to reinstate permissions to ECU you will need to go back through ECU-ORCID Connect and reconnect your ORCID to ECU.

You can assign three different visibility settings for the information on your ORCID record:

  1. Everyone – this information will be publicly available to any who visits your ORCID iD webpage.
  2. Trusted parties – this is limited access information that can be only be seen by trusted parties that you have granted access to your ORCID record. This would include ECU, who would become a trusted organization when you granted the requested permissions through ECU-ORCID Connect.
  3. Only me – this is private information that can only be seen by you and trusted individuals (who must have their own ORCID iD) that you have granted access to administer your ORCID record on your behalf. This information will not be accessible to ECU.

You can adjust the visibility settings of the information on your ORCID record. However, please note that your ORCID iD will always remain visible.

More information on how to use and manage your ORCID record is available at the ORCID support pages of the ORCID website.

You can also find helpful information at the ORCID page of the ECU Library’s Researchers’ Companion Library Guide.

  1. Right-click the iD icon, select Copy Image then paste this into your signature.   ORCID iD Icon
  2. Add your ORCID record URL directly after the iD icon.
  3. Save your signature.
  4. If you created a new signature, be sure to specify this as your default signature for New Messages.

Once you have created and/or connected your existing ORCID iD with ECU via ECU-ORCID Connect, your ORCID iD will be added to the contact details section of your ECU web profile page. In most cases, your ORCID iD should appear immediately, however it is possible this may occur overnight.

If your still can’t see your ORCID iD on your web profile after 24 hours, try viewing your web profile using a different web browser, clearing your browser cache or contacting your School’s Web Coordinator and request that they check your profile.

Otherwise, please contact the IT Service Desk via (61 8) 6304 6000 or itservicedesk@ecu.edu.au.
