Application rounds

ECU Strategic Research Institutes are typically funded for five years, and ECU Strategic Research Centres are typically funded for three years. Application rounds are held to identify the highest performing research entities at ECU to be renewed or established as ECU Strategic Research Institutes or Centres. The Strategic Research Fund (SRF) will provide funding to each successful Institute or Centre of between $300,000 to $1 million per annum to support Strategic Research Institutes or Centres to further grow in scale and excellence.

The next application round for ECU Strategic Research Institutes and Centres will be held in early 2025.

Please discuss with your Associate Dean (Research) and Executive Dean if you wish to apply in the next ECU Strategic Research Institute and Centre application round to begin planning.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Clear research program of strategic significance and value to ECU
  • Existing strong research quality, and capacity to continue to produce above world‑standard research
  • Demonstrated ability and capacity to sustainably generate external research income at a rate of 4:1 return on SRF investment
  • Effective and sustainable leadership and governance structures, with strong plans for growth

For reference, please note the ECU Strategic Research Centre Application Form 2023. Note this application form will not remain the same for the 2025 application round and was tailored for Centres only.
