ECU Strategic Research Institutes and Centres

ECU Strategic Research Institutes and Centres are groups of researchers of sufficient scale centred around a cohesive research topic of strategic significance to the University.

ECU Strategic Research Institutes and Centres receive funding from the Strategic Research Fund and are accountable to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), as well as to their Lead School. School‑based Research Centres are established at the discretion of the Executive Dean and are accountable only to their Lead School.

The following key characteristic differences apply between ECU Strategic Research Institutes, ECU Strategic Research Centres, and School-based Research Centres. This is documented in more detail in the below key documentation

  • Produces well above world-standard research
  • National and/or international academic leader in its field
  • Strong engagement with non-academic research end-users
  • Generates strong external research income
  • Mentors and develops EMCRs and HDRs
  • Recommended minimum membership of 10 research-active academics
  • Produces world-standard research
  • Strong national and/or international academic recognition in its field
  • Strong engagement with non-academic research end-users
  • Generates strong external research income
  • Mentors and develops EMCRs and HDRs
  • Recommended minimum membership of 5 research-active academics
  • Already, or on a clear trajectory towards producing world‑standard research
  • Strong HDR development
  • Other criteria largely at the discretion of the Executive Dean
