Defence Industry Security Program

To enable ECU’s continued ability to conduct Defence related research, ECU has sought reaccreditation as a member of the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP). The DISP membership allows Defence to understand the security environment of ECU and be assured that minimum levels of security are met when considering any Defence related research applications and awarding funds commensurate with ECU’s membership level.

The DISP accreditation obliges ECU to ensure all staff and students working on or involved in Defence related projects must meet the employment screening requirements of the Australian Standard AS 4811-2006.  This includes, but is not limited to, active research academics, professional staff, HDR students and their supervisory panels, and undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students. The AS4811-2006 requirements include:

  • Eligibility to work in Australia;
  • Employment history check for a minimum of the last five years;
  • An identity check requiring 100 points of ID;
  • Address history checks for a minimum of the last five years;
  • Character reference checks for a minimum of the last five years;
  • A current national police check;
  • Checks on all declared experience and qualifications; and
  • Social media assessment.

At the time of being awarded Defence related grants, Research Services will notify ECU’s DISP Security Officer (DSO). The DSO will confirm for Research Services if all staff listed on an application have met AS4811 screening requirements.  If the AS4811 screening requirements are not complete for any of the ECU staff and students, the DSO will contact the individuals to initiate the screening process.

Research collaborators at other universities, nationally and internationally, within industry, or government will also need to meet the AS4811 screening requirements. They are responsible for undertaking their own screening process and providing confirmation of this to the Chief CI of their project, who in turn will provide this to the ECU DSO.

NOTE: Attempting to access the FAQs and DISP screening process via Wi-Fi or external to ECU, you will need to connect to ECU using the Cisco VPN client.
