ARC and NHMRC Grants

Pre-assessment process and timelines for 2020/2021 NHMRC and ARC Grants

As ECU seeks to improve the quality of our research grant submissions, leading to improved success rates, Research Services will facilitate a program of pre-assessment of major category 1 grants, and the applicants, in particular those proposed to be submitted to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australian Research Council (ARC).

Please note the detailed timelines below for relevant schemes.

ARC Future Fellowships scheme objectives are to:

  • support excellent basic and applied research and research training by outstanding mid-career researchers to be recruited and retained by universities in continuing academic positions;
  • support national and international research collaboration; and
  • enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian Government priority areas

The stages and dates are detailed below:

  • Stage 1 - Category 1 pre-assessment documents to research-preaward@ecu.edu –5 October 2020
  • Stage 2 – Internal review of draft application by ECU Professoriate Group member - 26 October 2020
  • Stage 3 - Second Internal review by ECU Professoriate Group member – 9 November 2020
  • Final Application to be sent to Research Administration Officer - 16 November 2020
  • Closing Date9 December 2020

ARC Discovery Project scheme objectives are to:

  • support excellent basic and applied research and research training by individuals and teams;
  • support national and international research collaboration; and
  • enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian Government priority areas

The stages and dates are detailed below:

  • Stage 1 - Category 1 pre-assessment documents to research-preaward@ecu.edu –19 October 2020
  • Stage 2 – Internal review of draft application by ECU Professoriate Group member - 23 November 2020
  • Stage 3 - Second Internal review by ECU Professoriate Group member – 25 January 2021
  • Final Application to be sent to Research Administration Officer - 8 February 2021
  • Closing Date24 February 2021

ARC Discovery Projects 2022 – Information

ARC DECRA grants are aimed at Early Career Researchers; providing partial salary support and up to $50,000 per annum for eligible project costs for three years.

To be eligible to apply for a DECRA applicants require at the closing date to:

  • have an award of PhD date on, or after 1 March 2016, or
  • have an award of PhD date together with an allowable period of career interruptions that would be commensurate with an award of PhD date on, or after 1 March 2016.

The stages and dates are detailed below:

  • Stage 1 - Category 1 pre-assessment documents to research-preaward@ecu.edu – 21 September 2020
  • Stage 2 – Internal review of draft application by ECU Professoriate Group member - 12 October 2020
  • Stage 3 - Second Internal review by ECU Professoriate Group member - 26 October 2020
  • Final Application to be sent to Research Administration Officer - 11 November 2020
  • Closing Date - 25 November 2020

ARC DECRA 2022 Information Session – Panopto Recordings

ARC Discovery Indigenous scheme objectives are to:

  • support excellent basic and applied research and research training by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers as individuals and as teams;
  • support national and international research collaboration;
  • enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian Government priority areas; and
  • support and retain established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers in higher education institutions.

The stages and dates are detailed below:

  • Stage 1 - Category 1 pre-assessment documents to research-preaward@ecu.edu –26 October 2020
  • Stage 2 – Internal review of draft application by ECU Professoriate Group member - 1 February 2021
  • Stage 3 - Second Internal review by ECU Professoriate Group member – 15 February 2021
  • Final Application to be sent to Research Administration Officer - 1 March 2021
  • Closing Date17 March 2021

The NHMRC Investigator Grants are due 27 November 2019, with pre-assessment steps detailed below:

  1. The following information is required to be submitted to the DVCR for review and approval to progress application:
    1. CVs for all Chief Investigators
    2. Proposed aims of the project
    3. Project synopsis
    4. Project Vision, where required for the application
    5. Any pilot/preliminary data available to strengthen the proposal
    Maximum half page for sections b, c and d.  Please forward this documentation to research-preaward@ecu.edu.au by Monday, 23 September 2019.  The DVCR and a panel comprised of at least two members of the ECU Professoriate will make an assessment if the proposal can progress.
  2. Internal pre-assessment by internal ECU grant reviewer/s, sourced from Research Professoriate – 14 October 2019.
  3. External assessment by GrantEd or Mindyourway4 November 2019.
  4. Research Services internal deadline to Research Administration Officer - 18 November 2019
  5. Closing Date - 27 November 2019

ARC Linkage Project scheme objectives are to:

  • support the development of long-term strategic research alliances between higher education organisations and industry and other research end-users, in order to apply advanced knowledge to problems;
  • provide opportunities for internationally competitive research projects to be conducted in collaboration with organisations outside the higher education sector; and
  • enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian Government priority areas

The stages and dates for Round 3 assessment are detailed below:

  • Stage 1 - Category 1 ARC Linkage re-assessment documents to research-preaward@ecu.edu – 10 October 2020
  • Stage 2 – Internal review of draft application by ECU Professoriate Group member - 3 November 2020
  • Stage 3 - Second Internal review by ECU Professoriate Group member – 17 November 2020
  • Final Application to be sent to Research Administration Officer - 30 November 2020
  • Closing Date17 December 2020
  1. Stage 1/EOI - The following information is required to be submitted to the DVCR via research-preaward@ecu.edu.au for review and approval to progress application:
    1. CVs for all Chief Investigators
    2. Proposed aims of the project
    3. Project synopsis
    4. Project Vision, where required for the application
    5. Any pilot/preliminary data available to strengthen the proposal
    Maximum half page for sections b, c and d.  Please forward this documentation to research-preaward@ecu.edu.au by Monday, 24 February 2020.  The DVCR and a panel comprised of at least two members of the ECU Professoriate will make an assessment if the proposal can progress.
  2. Stage 2 - Initial full draft for internal review – 13 April 2020.
  3. Stage 3 - External assessment by GrantEd4 May 2020
  4. Research Services internal deadline to Research Administration Officer - 25 May 2020
  5. Closing Date - 10 June 2020

Please note the revised dates are for Ideas Grant Applications which have already been through Stage 1 pre-assessment.

    Maximum half page for sections b, c and d.  Please forward this documentation to research-preaward@ecu.edu.au by Monday, 31 August 2020. The DVCR and a panel comprised of at least two members of the ECU Professoriate will make an assessment if the proposal can progress.
  2. Stage 2 - Initial full draft for internal review – 28 September 2020.
  3. Stage 3 - Possible second internal review by Research Professoriate – 19 October 2020
  4. Research Services internal deadline to Research Administration Officer - 9 November 2020
  5. Closing Date - 25 November 2020

Please note for applications that completed Stage 1 and Stage 2 steps in February and March 2020 these will stay in the process and the next deadline will be Stage 3.  Applications which have not completed a Stage 1 and 2 assessment in February – March will need to complete these stages of pre-assessment by the above dates.
