WAHTN Consumer and Community Involvement

ECU signed an agreement with West Australian Health Translation Network (WAHTN) in December 2022 to engage their support to assist researchers with consumer and community involvement with research proposals and grant applications. The WAHTN support will include:

  • free on-line CCI training (see Events);
  • a masterclass series (see Events);
  • matching service to facilitate discussions with 1-3 consumers with lived experience;
  • Community Conversations with up to 30 consumers to discuss research approaches; and
  • access to a CCI Co-ordinator.

Matching Services / Involvement Bank EOI

The CCIProgram provides a matching service as part of the support offered to partner universities. The matching service seeks to appropriately match researchers with 1-3 consumers and/or carers with relevant lived experience to inform and review grant applications in order to optimise consumer and community involvement within the grant application.  ECU has allocated $2,500 to establish an Involvement Bank in 2023.  The Involvement Bank will seek to support researchers pursuing the following grants: NHMRC, MRFF, Cancer Council, WA Department of Health and/or Healthway grant applications.  Per the Consumer and Community Involvement Program’s Honorarium Guidelines, consumers should be reimbursed for their voluntary involvement in research with the suggested honorarium payment of $37.50 per hour (noting that all involvement activities require a minimum of 2hrs payment). Whilst completing your EOI application, please note that consumers typically spend between 1-4 hours per grant proposal review.

ECU Researchers will have the opportunity to apply for access to the Involvement Bank via the EOI process twice per calendar year, February/March and June 2023.

Further details are available in the Guidelines and EOI form.

Community Conversations EOI

A Community Conversation is a method of creating open conversations around questions of importance on a topic with a wide range of community members. Comments, thoughts, and ideas are captured and used to inform and create high level priorities for research, together with defining research questions. This is a powerful method of ensuring research is transparent, relevant and impactful. Community Conversations in collaboration with the WAHTN CCIProgram have a focus on topics of importance to human health.  A typical Community Conversation involves 15-30 community members and runs for 2 hours. The CCIProgram, in conjunction with the successful applicant research team, plan and facilitate the event, including supporting the research team in designing the list of questions that will be used to lead the Community Conversation. Following the event, the CCIProgram provides a structured report template for research teams to complete to capture the main and emerging themes from the event. Once completed, this can be used to inform future projects and research questions.

Further details are available in the Guidelines and EOI form.

CCI Coordinator
Jillian Northwood

Jillian joined the CCIProgram in August 2022. Prior to joining the CCIProgram, Jillian worked as a Doctor of Audiology specialising primarily in cochlear implants. Throughout her career she has actively collaborated within multidisciplinary teams in order to provide implant recipients holistic and person-centred care.

Jillian is looking forward to collaborating with partners in ongoing projects and actively engaging with consumers/persons with lived experience in efforts to form lasting working relationships between consumers and researchers. These relationships ultimately shape, impact and influence the trajectory for community health and health services.
