HDR Scholarships

The ECU Industry Engagement PhD or MBR Scholarship Scheme provides a pathway for PhD or MBR candidates to link with an industry partner, community organisation or government agency.

HDR Scholarships (RTP and ECUHDRS) are allocated based on projects to ensure that scholarship allocations align with the research strengths, priorities and objectives of the University.

Project-Based Scholarship Expressions of Interest are open to Research Supervisors in approximately February and June each calendar year. Further information and HDR Scholarship Guidelines are available to Research Supervisors on the Expression of Interest for Project-Based Allocation of HDR Scholarships webpage.

The competitive 2026 HDR Scholarship Main Round is open for HDR Candidates to apply on 3 September 2025 and close 11:59pm AWST 16 October 2025. Current and future HDR Candidates can find information on how to apply on the HDR Scholarships Round (RTP and ECUHDRS) webpage.

(For supervisor to complete)

Edith Cowan University (ECU) offers prospective PhD candidates the opportunity to undertake doctoral studies in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth (UoP) through the ECU–UoP Joint PhD Program.

The ECU–UoP Joint PhD Scholarship is open to prospective PhD candidates from all disciplines, yet prioritisation will be given to research conducted in the fields of Defence, Cyber Security and Criminology. Under this scheme, one scholarship will be available at ECU each year for five years, commencing in 2026.

Please refer to the ECU–UoP Joint PhD Scholarship Scheme Expression of Interest Guidelines for scholarship contributions.

Successful candidates will benefit from joint supervision and gain access to the research expertise, world-class facilities, and support services of both ECU and UoP.

ECU’s competitive scholarship round typically opens in September each year.

Program Overview

The ECU-UoP Joint PhD Scholarship process consists of two stages:

  • Stage 1: Supervisor/Project Scholarship Expression of Interest (EOI)
  • Stage 2: Candidate/Awardee Selection

Expression of Interest (EOI) Process

Prospective Principal Supervisors are required to email completed Expression of Interest (EOI) for this Scheme to grs@ecu.edu.au.

Before submitting an EOI, please ensure you have read the ECU–UoP Joint PhD Scholarship Scheme Expression of Interest Guidelines.

Steps in the EOI Process:

  1. The Supervisor or an ECU staff member email the EOI form to grs@ecu.edu.au.
  2. The EOI is reviewed by the School’s Associate Dean (Research) for endorsement. The proposed Supervisor will be advised whether the project is endorsed and if any supervisor compliance issues must be addressed.
  3. Endorsed projects are forwarded to the University Scholarship Review Committee for ranking and approval. The outcome will be communicated to the Supervisor, along with details of the next steps.

Important Information

  • EOIs may be assessed by reviewers who are not specialists in the proposed research field.
  • Proposals should be written in clear and accessible language suitable for a broad audience.
  • All required information must be included in the application to allow assessment without further clarification.
