NHMRC Development Grants

The Development Grant scheme supports individual researchers and/or research teams to undertake health and medical research at the proof-of-concept stage, specifically driving towards commercial outcomes within a foreseeable timeframe.

The intended outcomes of the Development Grants scheme are:

  • to increase, facilitate and expedite the translation of health and medical research outcomes through to commercialisation, within a foreseeable timeframe
  • to support proof-of-concept research with a feasible commercialisation pathway and a high likelihood of producing protected IP
  • to provide a potential mechanism through which research outcomes can be progressed to a stage that makes them competitive to receive industry investment through other government schemes or from the private sector
  • to encourage collaboration between health research, the private sector and industry (domestic and international)

Application Support

Your NHMRC Development Grant will need a 5-page business plan to show how the Development Grant research outcomes will contribute to advancing the commercialisation of your technologies.  For support in writing the business plan sections of your application please contact Gary Zlnay or Tyron Lopes in Commercial and Investment Services (cis@ecu.edu.au) as soon as possible if you are considering applying for a NHMRC Development Grant.

If you haven’t already, please complete an Invention Disclosure Form prior to contacting Commercial and Investment Services.

Commercial and Investment Services will also be able to advise on the protection of intellectual property and general commercialisation strategies.
