ARC Discovery Project

The ARC Discovery Scheme now consists of a two-step process by way of an EOI and invitation to full proposal.

The ARC Discovery Project Grant scheme now runs a two-stage application process, commencing with an Expression of Interest (EOI). Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full application.

ARC Discovery Project scheme provides grant funding to research projects undertaken by individuals or teams. The intended outcome of the Discovery Program is to contribute to the growth of Australia's research and innovation capacity by generating new knowledge and leads to the development of new technologies, products, ideas, job creation, economic growth, and enhanced Australian quality of life.

The objectives of this scheme are to:

  • support excellent pure basic, strategic basic, and applied research, and research training, across all disciplines (excluding clinical or other medical research) that addresses a significant problem or gap in knowledge and represents value for money;
  • expand research capacity in Australia by supporting excellent researchers and teams;
  • foster national and international research collaboration;
  • create new knowledge with economic, commercial, environmental, social, and/or cultural benefits for Australia; and
  • enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian Government priority areas.

The scheme provides funding between $30,000 and $500,000 per year for up to five (5) consecutive years.

Experimental Development

The Australian Research Council Act 2001 (amended 2024) excludes the use of ARC funding for activities classified as ‘experimental development’. The updated advice clarifies that experimental development research may be included in an application, where these activities are to be funded from non-ARC sources. The application must make clear this differentiation.

The ARC Experimental Development Policy is located on the ARC website.
