What happens when a report is made?

Reporting incidents of sexual assault or sexual harassment is encouraged at ECU. While people are encouraged to report, there is no obligation to do so. This is an individual decision and the person reporting can remain anonymous.

Where reports are brought to the attention of the University, they will be treated seriously, sensitively, respectfully, supportively and confidentially

How do I report sexual assault or sexual harassment to ECU?

  • Call ECU Security on (08) 9304 2282 – all hours;
  • Complete the ECU online form

Reports involving students are escalated to the Director Student Life, and reports against staff are sent directly to the Director People and Culture for action and the Deputy Vice Chancellor for information only.

The People and Culture Director's nominee will:

  • Attempt to contact the complainant, if known, as soon as the report is received.
  • Provide advice on support options available, including counselling, medical, and where required, precautionary measures that may be implemented.
  • Inform the complainant of the next steps, including the types of enquiries that are likely to be made, expected timelines, and ongoing communications.
  • Discuss possible, workable outcomes with the complainant.

Reports of sexual assault to the WA Police, in most instances, can only be made by the individual the subject of a sexual assault. ECU will support individuals who wish to report to WA Police, where requested.

I am both a staff member and a student what will happen?

If the harassment or assault happened in a person's role as a staff member, the report will be sent to the Director People and Culture.

  • The extent of an investigation will depend on the circumstances and will be discussed with the complainant.
  • The University can only act in accordance with the powers provided for in the ECU Act, Statutes, Rules, By-Laws, Enterprise Agreement and policies.
  • The University cannot undertake criminal investigations and make decisions which result in the awarding of compensation.
