Achievement Relative to Opportunity

The principle of achievement relative to opportunity is an approach to assessing staff performance and achievement, such as in performance appraisals and academic promotion. It ensures an individual’s achievement is seen in the context of the opportunities available to them, and acknowledges that individuals have varying life experiences that impact on work and productivity.

Through sponsorship by the ECU Athena SWAN program, People and Culture is reviewing the University’s practices of assessing achievement relative to opportunity.

A discussion paper “Assessing Achievement ‘Relative to Opportunity’” was developed to engage staff in a discussion on how ECU can better apply these principles in our human resources practices.

Feedback from academic and professional staff has been used to assist the University in developing an inclusive and consistent approach to achievement relative to opportunity.
