Milestones

Your research journey is structured around six milestones, marking key stages from commencement to thesis examination. Meeting the minimum requirements for each milestone by the specified deadline ensures you're on track for a successful completion of your HDR program within the expected timeframe.

Milestone 1 – Induction

As a new HDR candidate, Milestone 1 focuses on familiarising you with your course and its requirements at ECU, as well as relevant state, national, and legislative regulations pertaining to your research and HDR studies. It also ensures you're aware of the support, professional development opportunities, and your responsibilities within your course offered by the University.

In Milestone 1 (M1),  you are required to complete the following (minimum requirements):

For M1 to be recorded as Achieved, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Compile the supporting documentation including a copy of your:
    • Completion certificates for the Work Health and Safety Induction, GRIP and RIPL.
    • Completed HDR candidate and Supervisor Agreement and Skills and Knowledge Audit (MyPLAN).
  2. Complete the Milestone 1: Induction Form (M1 form)
  3. Email the M1 form and supporting documents to your Principal Supervisor for approval.
  4. Submit only your approved M1 form online via the M1: Induction Submission Portal. Important: You must be logged into the student portal with your student credentials to submit your milestone.

Complete your Milestone 1 form

Milestone 1 must be completed within the specified timeframes from the start of your HDR course (full-time or equivalent part-time):

Doctoral

  • Doctor of Philosophy – 2 months
  • Integrated Doctor of Philosophy – 2 months

Masters by Research

  • Course duration 1.5 years – 2 months
  • Course duration 2 years – 2 months

Extension to Milestones

Milestone 2 – Research Proposal

Milestone 2 marks a crucial phase in your research journey, where you refine and assess your proposed project. You must demonstrate clarity, originality, and relevance in your research question, while ensuring your design and methods are suitable, ethical, and feasible. Presenting your research proposal to a panel of reviewers allows you to receive valuable feedback and guidance to further develop your research plan.

In Milestone 2 (M2), you will need to complete or achieve the following (minimum requirements):

For M2 to be recorded as Achieved, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Compile the supporting documentation including a copy of your:
    • Revised research proposal.
    • Evidence of independent review (reviewers’ reports) AND changes made in defense of the reviewers’ recommendations.
    • Originality Report of written proposal in TURNITIN (attach summary page only).
  2. Complete the Milestone 2: Research Proposal Form (M2 form)
  3. Email the M2 form and supporting documents to your Principal Supervisor for approval.
  4. Email the M2 form and supporting documents to your Associate Dean (Research) for approval.
  5. Submit only your approved M2 form online via the M2: Research Proposal Submission Portal. Important: You must be logged into the student portal with your student credentials to submit your milestone.

Complete your Milestone 2 Form

Milestone 2 must be completed within the specified timeframes from the start of your HDR course (full-time or equivalent part-time):

Doctoral

  • Doctor of Philosophy – 6 months
  • Integrated Doctor of Philosophy – 12 months

Masters by Research

  • Course duration 1.5 years – 6 months
  • Course duration 2 years – 6 months

Milestone 3 – Ethics and Governance Approvals

In Milestone 3, you'll focus on obtaining ethics and governance approvals for your research, ensuring compliance with the University's ethical standards and legal requirements. This milestone also involves conducting a thorough risk assessment to address any potential challenges or hazards. If your research involves overseas or multi-institutional aspects, additional approvals may be needed. Prior to commencing your research, it's imperative to consult with your supervisor and the Research Ethics Team.

In Milestone 3 (M3), you will need to complete or achieve the following (minimum requirements);

For M3 to be recorded as Achieved, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the Milestone 3: Ethics and Governance Form (M3 form)
  2. Email the M3 form to your Principal Supervisor for approval.
  3. Submit only your approved M3 form online via the M3: Ethics and Governance Submission Portal. Important: You must be logged into the student portal with your student credentials to submit your milestone.

Complete your Milestone 3 form

Milestone 3 must be completed within the specified timeframes from the start of your HDR course (full-time or equivalent part-time):

Doctoral

  • Doctor of Philosophy – 12 months
  • Integrated Doctor of Philosophy – 18 months

Masters by Research

  • Course duration 1.5 years – 8 months
  • Course duration 2 years – 10 months

Milestone 4 – Mid-Candidature

Milestone 4 aims to assess your progress towards course completion and ensure you have sufficient support to finalise your research. Your Principal Supervisor and Associate Dean Research will evaluate your accomplishments, challenges, and plans for the remaining candidature period. You may also be required to present your work to the HDR Progression Committee.

In Milestone 4 (M4), you will need to complete or achieve the following (minimum requirements);

  • Overview of research progress (300 word maximum)
  • Evidence of completed written work – may include:
    • Draft of a thesis chapter.
    • Literature review.
    • Peer reviewed manuscript.
    • Documentation of studio rehearsals/experiments.
    • Primary journal data/reflections.
    • Other as determined by Supervisors and approved by the relevant.
    • Associate Dean (Research).
  • Evidence of oral or public communication of research – may include:
    • Research seminar.
    • Conference presentation.
    • Creative performance.
    • Media engagement.
    • Public performance.
    • Public Workshop.
    • Other relevant activity approved by the Associate Dean (Research).
  • Thesis format or publication plan.

For M4 to be recorded as Achieved, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Compile the supporting documentation including evidence of:
    • Completed written work (examples above)
    • Oral or public communication of research (examples above)
    • Thesis format or publication plan
  2. Complete the Milestone 4: Mid-Candidature Form (M4 form)
  3. Email the M4 form and supporting documents to your Principal Supervisor for approval.
  4. Email the M4 form and supporting documents to your Associate Dean (Research) for approval.
  5. Complete Section D of the M4 form, if required.
  6. Submit only your approved M4 form online via the M4: Mid-Candidature Submission Portal. Important: You must be logged into the student portal with your student credentials to submit your milestone.

Complete your Milestone 4 form

Milestone 4 must be completed within the specified timeframes from the start of your HDR course (full-time or equivalent part-time):

Doctoral

  • Doctor of Philosophy – 24 months
  • Integrated Doctor of Philosophy – 24 months

Masters by Research

  • Course duration 1.5 years – 9 months
  • Course duration 2 years – 12 months

Milestone 5 – Thesis submission

Milestone 5 ensures your thesis meets the requirements for the relevant award and is ready for examination. You'll prepare your thesis according to guidelines and nominate examiners before submission, as outlined in Milestone 6.

In Milestone 5 (M5), you will need to complete or achieve the following (minimum requirements);

  • Your supervisor will need to complete a Nomination of Examiners at least at least three months prior to your thesis submission.
  • Submit your written thesis/exegesis submission, following the steps outlined on the Thesis Submission webpage.
  • An Oral examination, if required (required for all HDR candidates enrolled from 2018 onwards).

Milestone 5 must be completed within the specified timeframes from the start of your HDR course (full-time or equivalent part-time):

Doctoral

  • Doctor of Philosophy – 48 months
  • Integrated Doctor of Philosophy – 48 months

Masters by Research

  • Course duration 1.5 years – 18 months
  • Course duration 2 years – 24 months

Milestone 6 – Thesis/Course Completion

Milestone 6 is the final stage of your research degree, where you complete and submit your thesis after the examination.

To complete Milestone 6, amendments to your thesis must adhere to deadlines specified in Guideline: HDR Thesis Examination. Milestone 6, will be dependent on the outcome of your initial thesis submission, more information can also be found  on the After Examination webpage.

Extension to Milestones

Extend a Milestone (except Milestone 5 and 6)

Candidates seeking a milestone extension must apply at least 14 days prior to the due date of the milestone. A Candidate who receives a milestone extension will be placed on a Red Progression Status and required to enter a Progression Plan.  You will not be permitted to go on intermission during the extension period, unless the Associate Dean (Research) determines otherwise.

Candidates will only be permitted to two extensions during any one milestone, and up to three extensions maximum over the entire enrolment/candidature.
