Candidature management

As an HDR candidate, you're required to maintain active enrolment throughout your studies, ensuring enrolment each semester is your responsibility.

Candidature management conditions are detailed in the Research Training policy.

Candidature duration

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs typically last 1.5, 2, or 4 years (or part-time equivalent), depending on the specific course. Collaborating with supervisors to develop a feasible project within the required timeframe is strongly recommended. The minimum candidature period is two years (or part-time equivalent) for a PhD and one year (or part-time equivalent) for a Masters by Research.

You can find out how much candidature you have consumed, how much you have remaining and the expected submission date of your thesis for examination by contacting your School’s Coordinator or Research Student Support Coordinators in the Graduate Research Services.

Extension of candidature

If you do not complete your degree within the above mentioned time frames you will be considered ‘overtime’ and will need to apply for an extension of candidature to continue your enrolment.

International candidates

If you are an international candidate there are a number of possible implications if you extend your research degree. You must discuss the implications with a Student Success Officer.

Managing your candidature

You must meet regularly with your supervisory team to ensure the rate and quality of your work is in line with the standard of the degree. You should make sure you are aware of the milestones you are required to meet, and the expected timeframe for each milestone.

Support during your candidature

Your Skill and Knowledge Audit (MyPLAN) should be discussed and reviewed regularly with your supervisors. ECU offers a range of support services and research training workshops to help you develop the skills you need to progress through your research journey.
