Starting your journey

Your research journey at ECU begins today. ECU has a vibrant research culture and we have unique and innovative programs to support you through your research degree.

Getting started

At the beginning of your research journey there are many things you can do to get started. We suggest you start with the following steps:

  1. Meet your supervisors: They'll be your main support throughout your research journey.
  2. Connect to ECU's online services: Access the Student Portal and check your email regularly.
  3. Get your Student ID Card: Essential for campus access and services.
  4. Contact your School's research support: Learn about facility access and requirements.
  5. Attend orientation events: Get acquainted with resources and processes.
  6. Join workshops by the SOAR Centre. Getting started as a Research Student at ECU workshops.
  7. Follow Research Weekly SharePoint site (star top-right): Stay updated on articles, Training Workshops and Events calendar , grants, and events.

Your research journey

Your research journey encompasses six key milestones, each with specific requirements. Explore further details on the milestones webpage or refer to Guideline: HDR Milestones.

  • Milestone 1 - Induction
  • Milestone 2 - Research Proposal
  • Milestone 3 - Ethics and Governance Approvals
  • Milestone 4 - Mid-Candidature
  • Milestone 5 - Thesis Submission
  • Milestone 6 - Thesis/Course Completion

Alongside these milestones, you'll manage your candidature throughout your degree. This involves progress reporting with your supervisors, utilising support services and self-learning resources, and seeking additional funding and professional development opportunities.
