Software and databases

We provide access to electronic resources to help you develop your skills during your research journey.

Software

ECU Graduate Research recommends the following software to research candidates.

Qualtrics

Qualtrics is software for developing online surveys and gathering responses. For more information see the Qualtrics web page.

Turnitin

Turnitin can be used to check your writing for unintentional plagiarism. It’s used as part of the requirements for Milestone 2 and can also be used to check your thesis prior to examination, or for other writing for publications.

EndNote

EndNote is a database for storing and retrieving references. It works with Microsoft Word to create correctly formatted citations and reference lists. EndNote is an essential tool for research candidates intending to compile large reference lists in their theses.  The software is free for ECU candidates and staff.

Databases

ECU Graduate Research recommends the following databases as sources of valuable material for researchers. In some cases you’ll need to enter your ECU username and password to access a database.

Research Online is an open access digital repository of research output produced by staff, postgraduate candidates and affiliated authors of ECU.

You can browse research through:

  • School or Research Centre;
  • Journals and Peer-Reviewed Series;
  • Conferences, Symposia and Campus Events;
  • Theses Collections; and
  • Galleries

Sage Research Methods Online is a repository of materials covering research methods. This resource provides over 600 downloadable ebooks, including:

  • Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias and Handbooks
  • The entire "Little Green Book" and "Little Blue Book" series
  • Two Major Works collating a selection of journal articles

ProQuest Digital Dissertations gives you access to 2.7 million theses in full text. These are available from a Library One Search (while the search results will state citation only, full text is available). For more information visit the Proquest website.

The Electronic Book Library provides access to over 60,000 ebooks across various disciplines. These can be read online within your browser window.

The Science Direct Elsevier eBook Collection allows unrestricted access to a range of ebooks across various disciplines (mainly science-focused).

The books are available in PDF formats with no Digital Rights Management, so you can freely download and save them to your personal computer/reader for the lifetime of your research project. To access this collection, visit the Library catalogue; click on 'Title' and search for 'ScienceDirect' (one word) to list the Elsevier collection.

Trove is an online resource run by the National Library of Australia (NLA) that allows users to search content available across the NLA databases. This includes books, journals, magazines, maps, audio and more.

Web of Science is predominantly a citation database, comprising sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. It enables you to track where, by whom, and how often an article has been cited. ECU has Web of Science coverage from 1980 onwards.

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources. It has smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research and it provides superior support to the literature research process.

Scopus is updated daily and covers these subjects:

  • Life Sciences - 4,300 titles;
  • Health Sciences - 6,800 titles (including 100% coverage of Medline titles);
  • Physical Sciences - 7,200 titles;
  • Social Sciences & Humanities - 5,300 titles; and
  • offers around 18,000 peer-reviewed journals from more than 5,000 publishers.
