Research area
Lidia is a PhD student at the Centre of Precision Health (CPH) in the School of Medical and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on biomarkers of melanoma and lung cancer for immunotherapy response using liquid biopsy. The motivation behind this research is the observation that not all patients benefit from immunotherapy treatment, despite its great advancements in treating cancer like melanoma and lung cancer. Predicting treatment response is challenging, leading to unnecessary costs and immune-related side effects. To overcome these challenges, Lidia is exploring the use of liquid biopsy as an alternative to traditional tissue biopsy for identifying biomarkers. Specifically, she is investigating structures called extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are released by all cells in the body and carry molecular information from their cell of origin. Through her research, Lidia aims to validate EV signature and determine its role in predicting how melanoma and lung cancer patients will respond to immunotherapy, using reliable and robust methods.
Background
Lidia completed her Bachelor of Science (Clinical Laboratory Science) degree with Great Distinction from Asmara College of Health Sciences, Eritrea. She then worked as Clinical Laboratory Scientist at the Eritrean National Health Laboratory in the Department of Pathology, where she gained valuable laboratory experience and published research papers. Lidia received a prestigious World Bank Scholarship to pursue her master’s degree in Laboratory Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Zambia. Following the completion of her master’s degree, she was awarded the ECU Higher Degree by Research Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Australia. Besides her academic pursuits, Lidia enjoys reading books, watching movies, going for walks, and spending time with family and friends.
