ECU-University of Portsmouth (UoP) Joint PhD Program Scholarship

Edith Cowan University (ECU) and the University of Portsmouth (UoP) have established a Joint PhD Program that brings together the research strengths of both institutions.

This program enables candidates to pursue doctoral studies while benefiting from the expertise, facilities, and support services of two innovative universities. Students will gain valuable international research experience and graduate with a truly global perspective.

The ECU–UoP Joint PhD Program is open to prospective PhD candidates across all disciplines, yet prioritisation will be given to research conducted in the fields of Defence, Cyber Security and Criminology.

  • Through the current scholarship scheme, one PhD scholarship will be available each year from each host university for five years, starting in 2026.
  • Candidates will be jointly supervised and have access to the research expertise, infrastructure, and support services of both ECU and UoP.
  • ECU and UoP will each advertise scholarships throughout this program. Applicants should only apply to the scholarship at one institution.
  • Applicants enrolling with ECU as their home institution should apply to the Scholarship at ECU. ECU’s competitive scholarship round typically opens in September each year.
  • Applicants applying with UoP as their home institution should apply to the scholarship at UoP. Details of UoP’s competitive scholarship round are available here .
  • Candidates will be required to commence the course and scholarship from July 2026.
  • One PhD scholarship will be available each year from each host university for five years, starting in 2026.
  • The scholarship value and duration of support are outlined in the Candidate Agreement and ECU and UoP Conditions of Award  .
  • Scholarships are offered independently by ECU and UoP.
  • These scholarships are open to individuals who are ECU prospective students.
  • To be eligible to apply for these scholarships, you must hold an offer for an ECU doctoral degree course (PhD or Integrated PhD).

You are required to follow these steps

  1. Check the application process and eligibility criteria on the Scholarships webpage.
  2. Review the advertised research projects below.
  3. Contact the named HDR Supervisor or Project Lead to discuss the advertised projects. You can only be nominated for one project.
  4. The HDR Supervisor or Project Lead, in consultation with others, will review and assess applications to identify suitable candidates.
  5. If the HDR Supervisor or Project Lead determines you are the suitable candidate, you will receive a confirmation email inviting you to apply. This invitation to apply is confirmation of your scholarship application only.
  6. Submit your application via ECU Online Scholarship Application Portal.
    • The portal will open on 10 November 2025 and close on 4 January 2026.
