Legal working rights and obligations

As an employee of ECU, you must have a legal ability to work in Australia.

To legally work in Australia you must:

  • be an Australian Permanent Resident; or
  • be an Australian Citizen; or
  • have an employer-sponsored visa; or
  • have a non-sponsored working visa.

During the recruitment process and prior to being offered a contract of employment, you should have been asked to verify your legal working rights. Please refer to your HR Adviser for further information.

Sponsored visa employees

If you have been employed by ECU on an employer-sponsored or non-sponsored visa type you have obligations in addition to those outlined in your visa approval notice.

  • You must advise ECU and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) regarding any change in circumstances (including change of address) for yourself and any dependants nominated in the visa.
  • If your position (or related activities) at the University changes, you are required to advise HR Services (hr@ecu.edu.au) and DHA. In some cases DHA may request you apply for a new visa (unless your visa is close to expiry).
  • If you breach the conditions of your visa, it may be cancelled.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a valid visa to remain in Australia at all times.

You can check your visa conditions and expiry date of your visa through Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO).
