After thesis examination

For candidates without an oral examination component

After all of your examiners’ reports have been received by Research Assessments, they’ll be sent to the Graduate Research School Committee (GRSC) for consideration.

The GRSC will determine the outcome of your examination and Research Assessments will contact you with your result and instructions on the next step in the process.

The Graduate Research School Committee will recommend an outcome level based on the examiner reports. The levels are:

  • (i) passed without conditions;
  • (ii) passed, subject to minor amendments being made to the satisfaction of the principal supervisor;
  • (iii) passed, subject to major amendments being made to the satisfaction of the relevant Associate Dean (Research);
  • (iv) revised and re-submitted for examination; or
  • (v)failed.

For candidates with an oral examination component

After your final report has been received by Research Assessments, they’ll be sent to the Dean, Graduate Research School for consideration. The Dean will recommend an outcome based on the final examination report and Research Assessments will then contact you with your result and instructions on the next step in the process.

The levels are:

  • (i) passed without conditions;
  • (ii) passed, subject to minor amendments being made to the satisfaction of the principal supervisor;
  • (iii) passed, subject to major amendments being made to the satisfaction of the relevant Associate Dean (Research);
  • (iv) revised and re-submitted for examination; or
  • (v)failed.

Minor amendments (level i and ii pass)

A number of students will have to make minor amendments before their thesis is ready to be passed. Research Assessments will send a letter and copies of the examiners’ reports, instructing you what to do next. Please note:

  • Amendments must be incorporated into the text of the final version of your thesis;
  • You cannot make any changes to your thesis not specified by the examiners (or implied in their reports);
  • You must list all changes required by the examiners and against each required change either document what change has been made, indicating the relevant page numbers, or provide an academic argument why the suggested change is inappropriate.  You should sign this document and submit it to your supervisor, along with the final copy of your thesis and examiners’ reports for review;
  • You have six weeks to complete minor amendments. If, due to exceptional circumstances, this isn’t possible you can seek an extension from Research Assessments;
  • Forward your amended thesis along with a copy of your list of amendments and examiners’ reports to your supervisor for review. When your supervisor is satisfied with your amendments they should advise Research Assessments that the corrections have been made and you can then proceed to the next steps towards completion of your degree.

Major amendments (level iii pass)

Major amendments are subject to approval of the Dean of School or nominee before the thesis is ready to be passed. Research Assessments will send a letter and copies of the examiners’ reports, instructing you what to do next. Please note:

  • Amendments must be incorporated into the text of the final version of your thesis;
  • You cannot make any changes to your thesis not specified by the examiners (or implied in their reports);
  • You must list all changes required by the examiners and against each required change either document what change has been made, indicating the relevant page numbers, or provide an academic argument why the suggested change is inappropriate.
  • You have three months to complete major amendments. If, due to exceptional circumstances, this isn’t possible you can seek an extension from Research Assessments;
  • Your supervisor should forward your amended thesis along with a copy of your list of amendments and examiners’ reports to your Dean of School, or nominee, for review. When they are satisfied with your amendments the Dean of School, or nominee, should advise Research Assessments that the corrections have been made and you can then proceed to the next steps towards completion of your degree For more information visit the Completion of degree web page.

Revision and re-submission (level iv)

In some cases, the GRSC may recommend revision and re-submission of your thesis to one or more examiners. For instructions visit the Resubmitting for examination web page.
