Eligibility

To be eligible for the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP), you must meet all eligibility requirements set by the Australian Government.

Before applying, we recommend using the Commonwealth Prac Payment Eligibility Checker to determine whether you are likely to be eligible.

To be eligible for CPP, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Student Eligibility
    Be a domestic student (Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen).
  2. Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)
    Be enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).
  3. Course Eligibility
    Be studying an accredited Bachelor's or Master's degree that leads to entry-to-practice in Teaching, Social Work, Nursing, Midwifery
  4. Placement Eligibility
    Be undertaking a mandatory placement that:
    • Ends on or after 1 July 2025; and
    • Requires an average of 30 hours or more per week; or
    • Is a Midwifery Continuity of Care placement that limits your ability to maintain paid employment; or
    • Meets the requirements under Exceptional Circumstances where you have a Learning Access Plan (LAP) in
  5. Maximum Funded Weeks
    Have remaining Commonwealth Prac Payment funded weeks available for your course.
  6. Means-Tested Eligibility
    You must meet one of the following means-tested eligibility pathways:
    • Income Support Payment (ISP)
    • Employed - Need  to  Work
    • Exceptional Circumstances

6.1 Income Support Payment (ISP)

You may be eligible if you:

  • Receive an eligible Income Support Payment.
  • Provide your Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Customer Reference Number (CRN).
  • Authorise ECU to verify your payment status.

Eligible Centrelink Payments

  • Age Pension
  • Austudy
  • Carer Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • JobSeeker Payment
  • Parenting Payment
  • Special Benefit
  • Farm Household Allowance
  • Youth Allowance (Student, Apprentice or Job Seeker)

Eligible Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Payments

  • Age Pension
  • Income Support Supplement
  • Service Pension
  • Veteran Payment
  • Education Allowance

Other Eligible Payments

  • ABSTUDY Living Allowance

You must be receiving the payment at the time you submit your CPP application.

Receiving an eligible Income Support Payment does not automatically guarantee CPP approval. You must still meet all other eligibility requirements.

6.2 Employed - Need to Work

You may be eligible if you can provide documentation demonstrating that, during the four-week assessment period, you:

a. Worked more than 15 hours per week on average
b. Earned no more than $1,536.37 gross per week

During the four weeks before either:

  • You apply for CPP; or
  • Your placement starts,

whichever is earlier.

This includes other income such as scholarships or similar financial assistance.

6.3 Exceptional Circumstances

You may still be eligible if temporary circumstances outside your control prevent you from meeting the standard CPP requirements.

Examples may include:

  • Disability-related circumstances
  • Health and medical circumstances
  • Acute personal or family circumstances

Applications under Exceptional Circumstances are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
