Getting started

Getting started at ECU is easy. To help you get settled in to your new environment with us, this part of staff induction will guide you through the things you’ll need in your first few weeks.


Items for getting started

Staff ID card

Your ECU staff ID card can be used for a number of purposes. ID cards can identify you as a staff member, be used to borrow books from the library and have the option to be TransPerth Smart Rider cards. For more information, see our Multimedia Resources web page.

Access card

Access cards allow access to secured buildings within the University for your specific area permissions. Take the completed staff access card request form to the Campus Support Office.

Staff Kiosk

The Staff Kiosk is accessible from the Staff Portal. The kiosk provides you with access to your human resource information. You can:

  • view your salary;
  • view and print payslips and payment summaries; 
  • view and update your personal details such as address and emergency contacts;
  • request and review leave bookings and balances;
  • book professional development courses.

Office key

If you’re working in an office then you will probably require a key. Ask your supervisor if this has been arranged for you otherwise take the completed Office key form to the Campus Support Office.

Campus maps

We have interactive maps on our website to help you find your way around each of our three campuses. For more information, see our campus maps web page.

Staff directory

If you’re looking for another staff member’s contact details you can look them up in the staff directory by entering their name in the search bar on the ECU homepage. For more information, see our staff directory web page.

Telephone mailbox

All our landline telephones are equipped with voicemail facilities. Please set up your mailbox as soon as possible. To gain access to your mailbox dial extension 8099 (6304 8099 from off-campus), enter your initial password of 0000 then follow the prompts. Travelling to work and parking

We encourage you to investigate all alternative travel methods to and from work. If you do choose to drive then you will need a parking permit to park in any of the allocated staff car parks. There are permit options and you can save money by salary packaging the cost of a permit.

Academic calendar

Student Services publish an academic calendar each year that outlines important semester dates. To view the calendar, see our Student Services’ important dates web page.

Email etiquette

Emails are the predominant method of communication across the University. We expect all staff to adhere to the email etiquette guidelines to ensure that a consistent standard of professionalism and presentation is used across ECU. For more information, see our email policy.

Academic Workload Models

The ECU Enterprise Agreement provides the framework in the development of academic workload models.  The Work Unit consults with it’s academic employees to develop a model, and the model provides for the allocation of academic workload which typically consists of assigned and self-directed tasks

ECUSIS

ECU Spatial Information System (ECUSIS) is an online tool developed by Facilities and Services to provide access to a range of services including:

  • Meeting room bookings (this is separate from booking a lecture theatre, tutorial room or case study room).
  • Staff locator – an alternative version of the staff directory.
  • Room enquiry – search for meeting rooms by size or resources.
  • Maps and plans – enhanced version of the interactive campus maps providing additional details such as occupants, fire wardens, area and capacity.
  • Move manager – this service needs to be used whenever a new staff member commences or is relocated to another office.

ECUSIS is accessible from the Staff Portal.

Mail delivery

Our mail delivery service is managed by the Campus Support Office. There are two inter-campus deliveries per day and one for Australia Post. For more information, see our mail distribution web page.

Use of an ECU vehicle

You can use an ECU vehicle for business purposes only. To book a vehicle or for more information, see our vehicle management web page.

Hiring multimedia equipment

Staff are able to borrow multimedia equipment from Multimedia Resources (MMR). To borrow equipment, you need to complete an online form on our MMR staff web page.

Name badges

All staff are encouraged to wear a name badge at work, to meetings and whenever representing ECU. Ask your supervisor if this has been arranged for you already otherwise you can arrange this with your Office Administrator.

Office name and number plate

All staff members are required to have a name plate created for either the office door or their desk, whichever is most suitable. Ask your supervisor if this has been arranged for you or see our office name and number plates web page for more information.
