Sonia
What is Sonia?
Sonia is an online placement application used to capture students’ placement information.
All schools with placements are required to enter placement information into Sonia.
Resources and Support Guides
Placement staff are encouraged to access the Sonia Community Resources for support resources on how to get the most out of Sonia. Some support pages e.g. user guides, will require login access. Complete the Sonia online Contact Us page to request login access.
Access Sonia
ECU placement staff and associated internal staff will need to download and install:
- Sonia client
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 on their desktop.
You will need to contact your School Senior Placement Support Officer to request a login account. Alternatively you may email business.support@ecu.edu.au with details of the Sonia discipline you require access to.
Once your Sonia account is granted you will be able to login using your existing Staff Portal credentials.
Please note the Sonia client will require an MS Windows operating system.
Two client install options available for Sonia:
Test Environment: Populated with fictional students and is a safe environment to practice and trial features.

Production Environment: Live to ECU students in a placement program.

Please note Sonia 2018, Q4 requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 which is available in the Software Centre (you would most likely currently be on a prior version so will need to update). This framework is also compatible with the current version of Sonia, so please download this from the Software Centre.
- To download go to the windows start menu and type software. The ‘Software Centre’ should appear in the menu.
- Open the Software Centre and in the search bar at the top right search for framework
- Double click on ‘Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2’ (purple icon) to begin install.
- Note once installed you will need to restart your computer before using Sonia QA.
Students and external staff (placement supervisors, field educators) do not require the client software to access SONIA.
Access is available from the ECU Student Portal or ECU Staff Portal under Other Logins, from the link titled Sonia Online. Alternatively, Sonia Online can be accessed from the following Web address: https://sonia.ecu.edu.au
To access Sonia Online:
- Select your school listed on the Sonia Online page
- At the top of the Sonia login page, select your designated role
- Click on ‘University Sign in’. This will display the ECU Web Portal Login
- Enter your ECU Username and Password.
Students and supervisors can track their placements and notification on their mobile devices vie the free Sonia mobile app, available for Android and iOS devices.
Training
Sonia can provide online one-on-one or school-focused group training can be arranged by videoconference. Please contact Sonia Support directly to arrange a group training session by filling in the Sonia Contact Us form.
