Writing your ethics application in REMS

What to prepare in advance

Advanced preparation will assist you in writing and submitting a complete ethics application that is easily understood by reviewers outside of your field of research (i.e. plain language).  At ECU, it is the Supervisor who will be the lead Chief Investigator on your Ethics application, so they should guide you through this process. Also remember that you can save your application at any time throughout its preparation; you don’t have to complete it in one sitting.

Checklist for what to prepare in advance

There are templates and forms available to assist you in developing some of the resources listed below that may be needed for you application. The list of forms that you may need is provided below. To review the questions that are asked in REMS, and to see the advice about what reviewers are looking for in each question, see 'Guidelines for Researchers'.

  • Team members, their qualifications and skills/experience relevant to this project.
  • Research scope, aims, themes , questions and methods.  This information should be developed under the guidance of, and approved by, your supervisor. This information should be described in plain language in your application.
  • Plan for recruitment of research participants
  • Considerations around informed consent by research participants
  • Collection, use and management of data and information – what data are you collecting and how will it be managed?
  • Communication of Research Findings or Results to Participants
  • Dissemination of Project Outputs and Outcomes - What is the plan for reporting, publishing or otherwise disseminating the outputs/outcomes of the research, including to participants?
  • Risk – you will need to assess risk to participants and put strategies in place to lessen any risk.
