Applying for animal ethics approval

All new animal ethics applications at ECU must be submitted via the Research Ethics Managment System (REMS), and:

  • The functionality to create a new application ins STREAM will be turned off;
  • All other STREAM functionality will remain, for example to download copies of an application;
  • All applications entered in STREAM before the move to REMS will remain in STREAM, there are no requirements to transfer applications to REMS;
  • All ECU staff members and students involved in the use of animals, must complete the ANZCCART ComPass Phase 1, free online training, uploading evidence of completion to your ethics applications.
  • ECU's part-time Animal Welfare Officer, Dr Deirdre Bourke can provide help and advice to staff and students, in their use of animals, including review of draft applications, prior to submission to the Animal Ethics Committee.

All research at ECU should be tested within the Proportional Review Checklist (PRC) to determine the most appropriate review pathway for its review.  This includes animal research.  If your answers to the questions asked in the PRC indicate your work requires animal ethics review, you will be taken to REMS to complete your application.

Developing an application for ethics approval can require considerable time, depending on the nature of your project. However, you can start an application at any time in REMS and work on it (in several sessions if necessary) until it is ready to submit for review.

Process

Important: Ethics approval is required prior to any research or teaching activities involving the use of animals. Retrospective ethics approval cannot be granted.
