(National Indigenous Unigames)
The Indigenous Nationals is an annual, week-long multi-sport competition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at University from all over Australia.
The first Games were held in 1996 and were attended by around 30 students, they have since grown to host hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from universities around Australia. Students compete in four core sports (touch football, netball, basketball, volleyball) plus a traditional Indigenous game every year!
This year, it is expected at least 35 teams made up of 14 players from universities around Australia will enjoy competing in the sports as well as immersing themselves in cultural and social activities.
The event is held annually at different universities around Australia. This year, the event will be held at The Wollotuka Institute at The University of Newcastle and gives students from the teams attending, a great opportunity to travel and compete in an amazing environment that celebrates the rich sporting culture of Indigenous Australians.
Indigenous University Games (IUG) is open to all ECU Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students. Students must be enrolled in at least one unit during Semester 1 to be eligible to compete.
All students competing at Indigenous University Games must also meet the following requirements:
The best way is to attend ECU's Sports Sign-Up Day being held on each campus at the start of Semester 1. Following Sports Sign-Up Day, students are invited to train and form teams under the guidance of their IUG Team Captain.
As the team will be travelling interstate there will be a cost incurred per student. This cost will be dependent on the level of sponsorship and fundraising that the team commit to. Uniform, bus transfer and accommodation fees will be subsidised by ECU Sports.
