SOAR sessions

Open to higher degree by research and honours candidates, the SOAR sessions are workshops bringing research candidates together to promote discussion and skills training in a friendly and relaxed environment.

At each session Peer Advisers present a topic, sharing their own knowledge and experience and this is followed by a group discussion. Recent topics have included:

  • Introduction to Machine Learning
  • Tips & tricks for using Excel more efficiently
  • Three methods for Data analysis (R, SPSS, Python)
  • Top tips for formatting thesis with Word
  • Comparing survey tools for research projects
  • Getting Started as a Research Student
  • A beginners guide to prompting generative AI tools
  • Tips & tricks for creating impactful presentation
  • Introduction to Nvivo: A beginner's guide

Register to attend a session

SOAR sessions run regularly throughout the year Registration is encouraged, but not essential and you can attend as many sessions as you like.

If you are unable to attend a session that you are particularly interested in, you can book a one-to-one appointment with a Peer Adviser.
