Nationwide Emergency Alert Test: Information for 'Safe Phone' Holders

Thursday, 09 July 2026

Tags:

On Monday 27 July, every phone in Australia will sound a loud test emergency alert. If you or someone you care about has a safe phone, here's what you need to know.

What is a ‘safe phone’?

A safe phone is a phone or device, often kept separate from a person’s main phone, that someone uses may use if they are experiencing family and domestic violence. The ‘safe phone’ can keep them in contact with family, friends and/or support services. Because these phones are often kept hidden, a loud alert could risk exposing the phone and putting them at risk.

What's happening

AusAlert is Australia's new national warning system for natural disasters and threats. It can:

  • Sound an immediate, loud siren on mobile devices (most phones, some smartwatches and tablets)
  • Override silent and Do Not Disturb settings
  • Reach every phone with an active SIM – and possibly some without

The national test will run on Monday 27 July at 12pm AWST.

How to avoid receiving the alert

  • Turn the device off
  • Or switch it to aeroplane mode
  • Keep it off (or in aeroplane mode) for at least an hour after the test
  • If possible, turn it back on somewhere out of earshot

If this could affect someone you know, consider letting them know about the test ahead of time and offering support.
