Student accommodation – What is ECU doing to help students?

Most capital cities in Australia are experiencing a shortage of affordable accommodation for students. At ECU we have been taking proactive steps to assist students, in particular our international students, to find accommodation such as:

  • Before their departure to Australia, students are provided with upfront and up-to-date information to support their arrival in Australia, including cost of living advice and support in finding appropriate housing and accommodation.
  • We continue our proactive outreach to new international students to support their transition to Perth. At this stage, students report they are finding accommodation via family and friends, on-campus accommodation and private rentals. A small number of students have required more in-depth assistance, and we have provided this type of advice and support.
  • We are also working closely with Study Perth to ensure that from arrival at the airport, students feel supported and are connected to our services from day one.
  • Additionally, we’re investigating options with hotel providers for reduced rates should short-term or emergency accommodation, so we are prepared.

If you receive any queries, please direct students to the Student Life team.

Australian Homestay Network (AHN)

ECU is now partnering with the Australian Homestay Network, Australia’s leading provider of high quality homestay experiences, to provide students with a different introduction to Australia via living with a family.

AHN is an excellent option for students new to the city who want to live off campus. Living with a local family helps students gain insights into the local surroundings and have a personalised introduction to life in Australia.

We have also been collaborating with our local council, community groups and alumni to encourage them to consider joining the Australian Homestay Network to provide accommodation to incoming students.

Housing Advice Officer

Student Life has recently advertised for a dedicated role within the Student Success team which, once appointed, will increase our capacity to provide support and information to students.
