ECU’s Business Growth and Development unit have just successfully identified, recruited and trained 27 ECU Student Ambassador Recruits (STARs) across our eight schools, as part of our newly established Student Ambassador Program to address recommendations from the High School Leaver Strategy. Welcoming the first cohort in Edith Cowan's House at the ECU Joondalup campus, seemed so fitting as a venue – our University’s namesake would have been proud.

We are so fortunate to be working alongside such inspiring and impressive students (now employed as staff), who will be sharing their stories and journeys of being an ECU student through our newly developed Student Ambassador Recruit (STAR) program.

What is the STAR program?

The STAR program consists of a mixture of undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse entry pathways such as ATAR, UniPrep courses, VET qualifications and/or non-school leavers. STAR program participants act as positive role models to give a first-hand view of the benefits of higher education to prospective students. They represent ECU at a variety of events on campus and in schools, colleges, and community settings in support of ECU marketing, recruitment and outreach strategies.

What do participants do?

‘STARS’ are employed to work directly with the ECU Future Student Engagements team, to share publicly, and peer-to-peer, their advice and insights based on personal experiences of being a student at ECU, at a variety of activities and events, including:

  • Open Days
  • Future Student Information Evenings
  • Campus tours and interactive workshops
  • External high school expos and presentations
  • Media opportunities, promotional photo shoots and video projects
  • Student testimonials for our publications, website and email campaigns

What kind of benefits are there in the STAR program?

Participants are paid as employees of ECU, and also receive a Certificate of Recognition upon the completion of their involvement and additional career development support from the Future Student Engagements team.

The STAR program also has many other benefits for participants. This includes:

  • Developing interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
  • Becoming a more confident public speaker
  • Being a part of a diverse and motivated team, working with students from across all areas of ECU
  • Improving employability
  • Gaining social and academic networking opportunities with fellow students and ECU staff
