Short-Term Extension process supports students through disruptions

University life can be unpredictable, and sometimes unexpected challenges make it hard to meet assignment deadlines. To help, ECU has introduced a new Short-Term Extension process, giving students a simpler, fairer way to request extra time when they need it most.

From Monday 18 August, students will be able to request a Short-Term Extension on eligible assignments through ECU’s Assignment Extension system.

What is it?

The Short-Term Extension is a new option within ECU’s existing extension process. It allows you to request a 3-day extension on eligible assignments (once per assignment), with immediate approval through the online system. It’s designed to support brief, unexpected disruptions – such as illness, personal matters or family emergencies – and does not require documentation.

What does it mean for you?

You can apply online when a short-term situation affects your ability to meet a deadline. If your assignment is eligible, the extension will be applied straight away, and your new due date will be confirmed by email.

Why is it important?

This new option gives you a fair and simple way to manage unexpected challenges without needing to provide documentation. It’s designed to support your wellbeing by reducing the stress and cost associated with having to arrange documentation for short disruptions. It also helps create a more consistent experience across units.

Key things to know:

  • You can request one Short-Term Extension per eligible assignment.
  • Not all assignments will be eligible. The option will only appear if your Unit Coordinator has enabled it.
  • If the Short-Term Extension isn’t available, you can still apply through the standard extension process.
  • Group assignments and assignments submitted outside of Canvas are not eligible.

If you have a Learning Access Plan (LAP)

If your LAP includes extensions, the 3-day Short-Term Extension counts as part of that total. For example, if your LAP allows up to 7 days, using the Short-Term Extension means you could request up to 4 more days.

Extensions are always counted from the original due date. If you know that you will need more than 3 days, you can use your LAP to request extensions for longer.

Need help?

Guidance and step-by-step instructions are available at the links below, including how to check eligibility and submit your request.

This new process is about making it easier to manage your studies without added stress, so you can focus on what really matters – doing your best work. If life throws you off track, the Short-Term Extension is here to help you keep moving forward.
