A message from the Vice-Chancellor

Dear All,

Today, we join communities around the world in celebrating Trans Day of Visibility, a vital opportunity to acknowledge the courage, resilience, and contributions of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. This day is not only about visibility but also about fostering understanding, respect, and inclusion within our university community.

As we reflect on the importance of this day, let us remember that every individual deserves to feel safe and valued. It is our collective responsibility to create an environment where everyone can thrive, free from discrimination and prejudice. By embracing diversity, we enrich our learning and working spaces, as well as the broader university community, making it more vibrant, innovative and inclusive.

I encourage each of you to engage in conversations, educate yourselves on the experiences of our transgender colleagues and students, and advocate for policies that promote inclusivity. Together, we can build a culture where everyone feels recognized and celebrated for who they are.  Some positive initiatives are already in place at the university to support transgender and gender diverse students at ECU which you can read more about here.

Let us stand in solidarity with our transgender community members today and every day, affirming our commitment to a university that champions equality and respect for all.

Thank you for your continued dedication to making our university a safe and inclusive place for everyone.

Sincerely
Clare Pollock
Vice-Chancellor

More about Trans Day of Visibility and life at ECU

Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) is on 31 March, and ECU recognises and celebrates trans, gender diverse and non-binary people and communities.

The day was started by activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of recognition of trans people, noting that the only well-known gender diversity centred day was the Trans Day of Remembrance, a day of mourning.

ECU has a wide range of strategies for supporting LGBTIQA+ students.

  • Vocal advocacy from ECU leaders, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sport), Sophia Nimphius who spoke on a panel last year about the importance of trans inclusion in sport

Head to the Official Trans Day of Visibility website to learn more about the achievements of transgender people.
