International Women's Day is a time to celebrate

At ECU we have so much to celebrate on International Women’s Day. Firstly, it is an opportunity to cherish the immense honour of being named after Edith Dircksey Cowan and show our pride in being the only university in Australia to be named after a woman.

Edith was such an inspirational pioneering woman that her bold vision, of a better life for all women and girls, still drives us forward today.

International Women’s Day is held annually in March and this year’s United Nations theme is ‘March Forward’ - for all women and girls and rights, equality and empowerment are key to that bold vision.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which set a bold vision for gender equality. Since then, women have shattered barriers, influenced policies, and sparked global movements.

Women at ECU – our students, our staff and our Alumni – have boldly marched in Edith’s pioneering footsteps, excelling in research, teaching and learning, student and staff support and service and professional excellence. On International Women’s Day we celebrate you.

Congratulations on your achievements, on your bold moves, whether they be large or small, and thank you for your contribution to this University and to the global community.

Importantly, we celebrate and thank those of you working in the equity, Athena Swan and people and culture spaces and those policy areas that are so pivotal to all our efforts to march forward together as a more united community. We also celebrate those of you who advocate and contribute in your own ways to foster and facilitate positive change for gender equity.

I hope you will take the opportunity to celebrate with us and a panel of distinguished industry leaders for the Edith Cowan Memorial Lecture as we reflect on the importance of a more equitable society.
