Remembrance Day falls on the 11 November each year and is commemorated by Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States.
We acknowledge ECU students, staff and alumni who have served in wars and conflicts around the world, and mark the loss of those Australian soldiers who died fighting to protect our nation.
At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month a minutes silence is traditionally observed to mark the moment the Armistice that ended the first World War was signed.
Services will be held at war memorials including at the Joondalup War Memorial at 187 Grand Boulevard, at Axford Park in Mount Hawthorn, as well as the WA War Memorial in Kings Park. In Bunbury there will a service at ANZAC Park. Those paying their respects should arrive before 10:45am.
The symbol of Remembrance Day is the poppy. The small red flower became the emblem for remembering those lost during times of war.
In 1915 Canadian doctor John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields following the loss of a friend. In the poem he notes the poppies that covered battle scarred fields in France.
We will remember them. Lest we forget.
