The space outside the Library and the Student Hub on the Joondalup campus has a bright new look for this semester.
Aboriginal artwork has been installed that highlights the significance of the Black Cockatoo to the local area, and the stories of student's journeys.
Ngoolark is the Noongar name for the Carnaby’s black cockatoo, and the vivid gold coloured building that houses the Student Hub and Student Guild.
On the pylon's outside Ngoolark (building 34), the new artwork is made up of many different elements. Patterning symbolises students’ journey through school as well as the knowledge and lessons they have gained from their Elders during their journey at ECU.
The elders are shown atop of this patterning. They have been placed close to the cockatoo as they are culturally the closest to the native flora and fauna of our country. The elders represent students’ elders, their teachers, and guardians.
Meeting places/campfires have also been connected in this work. This symbolises people coming together as one to learn as one community at ECU.
The cockatoo contrasts against the bright colours behind it to make it a point of emphasis. This focal point of the art piece ties in with the exterior of the Ngoolark building and the significance of it.
