Creating a hovercraft, constructing an earthquake proof tower, or building a bionic hand are among the challenges hundreds of Year 10 students will be attempting in the upcoming Science and Engineering Challenge.

From 29 April to 3 May, over 1000 Year 10 Students from 40 schools across Perth will be competing in this fun week-long event at the Claremont Showgrounds which is all about encouraging students to build their futures in Science and Engineering.

The Challenge is run by The University of Newcastle and Rotary Clubs around Australia and has proved highly successful in inspiring students who are making subject selections to consider a future career in Science and Engineering.

Schools competing in The Challenge in WA compete for points, which are awarded based on their performance. The school with the highest point score at the end of the day is the winner. The champion state winning school then go on to compete at a National final later in the year.

Volunteers are required to supervise and assist with the various Challenge activities. You can volunteer for just one day or the full five days and commit to a full day or half a day. Volunteers will work in teams of 3 to support an activity. You don’t need to be an Engineer or Scientist to volunteer, just common sense and a sense of humour will be enough for you to have a great day!

When & where?

Monday 29 April to Friday 3 May at the Claremont Showgrounds.

Why volunteer?

Because it’s fun, rewarding and a unique experience. Volunteers will gain new skills and contacts and it will look great on your resume. All volunteers will also receive an ECU T-shirt to wear on the day.

Interested?

Register your interest by emailing Cassie Lister on c.lister@ecu.edu.au indicating your preference of day and session (half day or full day, morning or afternoon session).

Registration close 7 April 2024.
