At ECU, we embrace diversity and advocate for inclusion. We are committed to ensuring that all students, staff, alumni and visitors are well supported to be themselves and explore, express and affirm their gender at ECU and beyond.

Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) is on 31 March, and ECU recognises and celebrates trans, gender diverse and non-binary people and communities.

The day was started by activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of recognition of trans people, noting that the only well-known gender diversity centred day was the Trans Day of Remembrance, a day of mourning.

This annual event is an international celebration of trans pride and awareness, recognising trans and gender diverse experiences, and achievements. It is a time for sharing stories and starting conversations.

Gender diverse people may experience isolation and struggle with embracing their identities due to a lack of representation, role models, and community.

However, Trans Day of Visibility offers a chance for pride and celebration of gender diversity, including its accomplishments and community. TDOV provides an opportunity for this underrepresented group to reclaim space and be visible on their own terms.

ECU has a wide range of strategies for supporting LGBTIQA+ students, including all gender bathrooms on campus, a team who work to ensure the university is inclusive, and there's a great student club too.

Read some of the research that has been undertaken at ECU exploring elements of trans and LGBTIQA+ experiences.

Head to the Official Trans Day of Visibility website to learn more about the achievements of transgender people.
