A message from the Vice-Chancellor: The Voice to Parliament

Kaya,

I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the outcome of the recent referendum on the Voice to Parliament.

ECU took a clear position in supporting a Yes vote. This decision followed important debates and discussions with the Academic Board, University Executive and Council.

I am proud that our institution played an important role in leading local and national conversations about the idea of the Voice to Parliament.

I would particularly like to acknowledge the leadership of Professor Braden Hill, and many within the ECU team, who provided opportunities for students, staff and the wider community to engage in this important conversation.

I want to acknowledge that the past months have been particularly difficult for ECU’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students.

The public debate and commentary are likely to have adversely impacted First Nations communities regardless of the position they held in relation to the Voice to Parliament. ECU’s stance is one of ongoing care, empathy, and support. If you or someone close to you is struggling, please remember support is available.

At ECU we understand that the journey toward reconciliation is not defined by a single event, but by our collective determination and actions to build a better future for all.

We will continue to work towards a future where the voices and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are heard and respected in everything that we do.

Sincerely,

Professor Steve Chapman CBE
Vice-Chancellor
