Dear students,
With mixed emotions today I announce that after almost a decade of transformational leadership, ECU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve Chapman CBE, will be retiring from his position effective 31 July 2024.
Steve is a visionary leader and a driving force behind the growth and success of our university locally, nationally, and internationally. Under his leadership ECU has gone from strength to strength, with the most significant development during his tenure being our City Campus development.
Steve has led ECU with a focus on, and a dedication to our students, their experience, and their success. His unwavering commitment to our staff, academic excellence in teaching and research, innovation, and community engagement, has left an indelible mark, shaping ECU into the institution it is today.
Steve will be leaving ECU in an enviable and unique position, a university with an optimistic, inclusive, and collegial culture, that is financially secure, clear in its strategy and direction, and one of the most successful universities in Australia.
While there is still some time before Steve leaves ECU, the Council will begin a global search for his successor. We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition as we continue our journey of growth and advancement.
Please join me in extending our gratitude and warmest wishes to Steve. We will have the opportunity to celebrate his accomplishments over the next year and look forward to the bright future that his legacy has paved for ECU.
Sincerely,
Denise Goldsworthy AO
Chancellor
