Kaya,

Further to the recent announcement from our Vice-Chancellor, I am immensely proud that Edith Cowan University supports and advocates a yes vote in recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution through the enshrining of a Voice to Parliament.

ECU’s public endorsement of the Voice and ‘Yes’ vote is the authentic position for ECU to take. It aligns with our values as an institution and our long-standing commitment to advocating for social justice and positive change in our communities.

As an educational institution, it is important we seek to understand as much as we can about the Voice to Parliament and what it means for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and for all Australians.

There are many resources available that I encourage you to access to learn more about the Voice to Parliament, as well as the ongoing impact of colonisation, racism and systemic oppression faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people.

We have set up a dedicated page on our website to assist in providing access to information and other resources that will help everyone understand the importance of this historic moment.

Event Invitation to the ECU Community

This weekend, ECU is hosting a collaboration between Rabble Books and Kurongkurl Katitjin featuring author and Indigenous leader Thomas Mayo, acclaimed journalist Kerry O’Brien and author Sisonke Msimang.

Date: Saturday May 20, 2023
Time: 6pm to 7.30pm
Location: Mt Lawley Campus

This is a great opportunity to learn more about this significant referendum and get informed before the vote later this year.

As we head toward the referendum on a Voice to Parliament, there will be much information, and likely misinformation, and key arguments for and against the referendum. In living ECU’s value of ‘rational inquiry’, I strongly encourage everyone in the ECU community to take the time learn about Australia’s history, the meaning of the Voice to Parliament and the upcoming referendum.

Understanding our history and the potential of this historic opportunity will help all in Australia move forward confidently together.
